in today’s Grauniad about the concept of making a fresh start.

Here’s where it gets weird: “The concept of the fresh start suggests a very bizarre notion of the self. It implies that you can “stand back” from your personality characteristics, nominate some of them for change, then set to work. But, obviously, we are those characteristics; they define us. The self doing the work is the self being acted upon. This needn’t mean change is impossible – clearly, it isn’t – but it makes things vastly more complicated. It means we’re inescapably implicated in what we’re trying to leave behind, and it makes the idea of a fresh start highly suspect.”

I wonder if I should re-open this goal?

Comments:

hmm, I can see what the article is saying...

But I personally am in love with the idea of the fresh start. I’m not giving it up for anything!

joie de vivre is mellow

Your past is Fate. Right now is Freedom. You can’t escape your past, but your moment of personal power is right now, right here. Every moment is a fresh start, a new opportunity, a new chance to begin, or begin again.

I think

that notion has hit the nail on the head with why, no matter how hard I try, fresh starts always send me right back to where I was. Maybe it’s not a notion of fresh start that is needed…... maybe just a spring clean and updating is what is required, allowing you to keep the bits that make you you in a positive way, but allowing you the freedom to ditch those bits that hold you back.

Great goal by the way, absolutely love it.

thanks r

glad you found the notion a valuable one. I’ve been feeling like giving up on this goal recently, but perhaps now I’ll keep it :)

I think it is a really valuable notion. It does away with the feeling that ‘everything’ has to change, that it is an all or nothing deal.

snowleopard has gotten 10 cheers on this entry.
