Use of the words Always and Never 3 months ago

For almost a year now, I have been exercising caution with using these words. These are strong words and when we use them, we risk losing credibility, as there are few sentences that contain these words that could actually be true. This is a very good realization and I’m glad that a book called “Taming Your Tongue” that I picked up one day in the grocery store, brought this concept to my attention in a passage pertaining to “words to avoid”.

I try to always tell the truth, but I can’t say that I never exaggerate.

My dad

used to yell at us if we used those words. It drove him crazy. It was an automatic argument-loser… the minute we said always or never, he’d respond with “nothing is ‘always’ true”, and wouldn’t want to hear the rest of what we had to say.

So yeah, now as an adult it very nearly always drives me crazy when I hear other people use those words. I immediately lose respect for whatever point it is they’re trying to make, because I feel like their overall way of arguing the point seems overblown.

It doesn't bother me if it's a "known" exaggeration....

But if someone is trying to argue their point, and it’s just too obvious of a falsehood, then I can get a little defensive myself. Not, so much in an angry, aggressive way, but more like a “what the heck do you mean?’, kind of a way, or maybe even more mild than that with just pointing out the times when it isn’t always or never. I do that sometimes, and it’s not as if I’m really looking to start a fight, but it’s just that accuracy is important to me, when it comes to somethings, and for other people “too much accuracy” is to their chagrin, so unfortunately it’s led to an occasional personality clash where I get accused of being too argumentative, but I figure, what am I to do? Should I just nod my head at any and all inaccurate statements? Ah, people are strange sometimes. Weird stuff. I guess I can be a stickler sometimes, but I just find it odd when people paint me out to be the bad guy, when I try to correct them on something, or help them to better understand where I’m coming from (no, not necessarily agree, but just understand.) I just think, gee this could have been avoided, if you would have just…., but they don’t always see that sometimes.

But, anyhoo, I guess I’m rambling on here.

For my Dad, the phrase that irritated him was “Not really”. He would say, “What does ‘not really’ mean?” or “Does that mean yes or no?”

I haven’t considered the aggrevation of the phrase “not really”, but at first glance, I think your dad ’s point may be a good one.

scooterbird may have gotten the job after all

Hey, Rocky! Watch me pull a rabbit outta my hat!

“But that trick never works!”

smartstuff dear 43ers: thank you for not being awful people

I have

no idea what you’re talking about.

scooterbird may have gotten the job after all

Y'know, Rocky and Bullwinkle?

Arrrrrgh, I am old.

smartstuff dear 43ers: thank you for not being awful people

Bah

It’s not that you’re old. It’s that I don’t watch television. :/

I’ve seen rocky and bullwinkle. But only, like, an episode and a half. But that’s…. more than I’ve seen of a lot of shows.

tangerine_now coooold out there!

What does that

have to do with anything? ;-D

You asked for it.

I really enjoy

hearing parent stories. Thanks for putting your story here.

I never lie

which means I
can be careless
with the truth -
even writing this.

Then, maybe your truth just got just a little unhinged. Great job with the fitness goals, btw!

Thank you, S!

It’s really come together
for me this year, meaning
it seems more effortless
because it has become a
lifestyle and my meditation
practice as well.

Plus Jonesy supports my
crazy athletic endeavors for
which olives her even more.

Associating exercise with meditation is something that I’ll try to do. Thank you for the idea.

I hope you and LL are together really soon. You both deserve that happiness!!

The slowtwitch sports

seem to be the easiest
to meditate to – mostly
running and swimming for
me.

Biking (my style) takes
too much concentration
but I suppose it would
work better at a leisurely
pace.

Open water swimming is
my favorite because I feel
suspended in space – can’t
see the bottom and can only
hear my breathing.

It’s very peaceful – especially
in cool water which is
invigorating and refreshing.

Some people find it boring;
I find it a great way to
stop the head.

I tend to look at any

exercise practices I adopt as meditation too….moving meditation. I think I adopted that attitude toward it after taking a Tai Chi class years ago and something within me recognized that all forms of exercise could be viewed the same way. I also tend to feel “out of balance” when exercise is missing….when that form of meditation is missing…...as it has been for most of my summer due to scheduling conflicts and fatigue. I hope very much to rectify that once my schedule becomes more manageable and I get more sleep….............

Love that quote! And I may seek out that book; it sounds like something I need …

Thank you. It’s a very odd book, but with some valid points.

phensy all of life is a homecoming

For me

language is a living breathing entity, which changes from day to day. And so I hate to see words, anywords, being prescribed or being told how I should or shouldnt use this word or that word. Thats how words disappear from a language only to be misappropriated at a later date.

There is no correct or incorrect way to say something if the person hearing is open to whats being said(in my opinion). And by that I mean, if someone uses always and never, and someone listening chooses to take their use to the extreme, then any word they say can and will eventually be misheard in the same fashion.

I appreciate

your perspective and like your laid back attitude with this one. Sometimes I am too analytical for my own good, but it is who I am, so I have to go with it, LOL!

phensy all of life is a homecoming

Sorry

I wasn’t trying to have a dig.

I’m just passionate when it comes to language, and to letting it be whatever real people decide it should be day in day out.

For me, all words have 2 meanings, what they mean to the person who said them, and what they mean to the person who hears them. And quite often theres a difference between the two. But still thats no reason to consign words to the bin. It just means context and intention need to be better communicated.

Thank you

for your comment. I would not expect everyone to agree with all that I say. Hearing the opinions of others is a great chance for me to learn more and keep from getting stagnant in my way of thinking!

I hear what you are saying about respecting individual expression and I like the point you made. And to your point, people who often use the words always and never, may not come across as the most credible people, but they can be very entertaining! So, yes, I value the diversity in how language can be used.

As an example, I’ll take the liberty to compare people who excessively use always and never to people who like to tell “big fish” stories. As for me, I don’t like being perceived as the person who tells the “big fish” story; but still, I adore many people who are very good at telling hilarious “big fish” stories. These people are some of the best at making me laugh hard!

And, the realization I found from the little book I threw in my cart at the grocery store made me think about how I used the words always and never a lot at the time, which could result in people perceiving me to be a person who exaggerates, which is not how I want to come across. Understanding this was sort of like an ah ha moment that I wanted to record here, if that makes sense.

That is my best shot at explaining the entry, which ended up being longer than the entry itself…. :) Thank you for expanding my thinking on this subject!

One last daft comment :)

Always and Never stood up to have a fight,
Always knew he was never wrong
Never was sure he was always right.

So they split infinity
over the meaning of these words
in the end it fell to a simple dictionary
to point out to them that they were just being absurd.

Words without context and meaning
are merely marks on a page
it takes that grey matter between the ears
to interpret and to quell the onset of word rage.
