work because I like to, not because I have to (read all 13 entries…)
My boss

has hired the former GM of the company on a temp contract to develop a new program for us. Weird. Her status here is kind of ambiguous. She hired my boss when he started, many years ago, and built the company here, established many of the policies and procedures, etc. Officially, she’s on temp contract but I’ve noticed her asking a lot of perceptive questions and she seems to be onto a lot of the poor business decisions going on here, as well as maybe some of the morality issues. I’ve heard her nagging my boss about some of the projects he’s behind on. I’m not sure what she will do if she figures out some of the really inappropriate stuff going on; is she loyal to my boss because of their previous relationship, or would she blow the whistle and make a power move to take over?!

Today, she made a really perceptive comment and gave me a compliment about an aspect of my job I’m really passionate about. My boss has never given me positive feedback about this, one of my strengths. Little by little, the joy has gone out of my work. She brought a little bit of it back today. So easily.

I long to be managed, to be led, to be directed. This just makes me realize for real that my boss is not good at his job, and that I am not a bad employee but just poorly led.

Really trying not to gloat

but I’m listening to this woman criticizing my boss’s choices. I agree with her. Cool!

Isn't it a fantastic feeling

to be told that you’re doing something right? I’m so glad you felt a little bit of the joy and love of your job coming back to you today :) if we’re happy in our work and all that we do we enjoy it so much better and indeed are much more productive, inventive and much more able to work as a functioning team.
Sometimes it doesn’t take much for us to doubt ourselves and a well placed compliment for our efforts and abilities is always so rewarding.. I’m really happy that you felt a little of this today dragonfly…hopefully more will follow :)

Hi, I hope things are getting better. Your last entry was the one ray of sunshine in your orgy of self pity. not to sound insenstive or anything.
In life you can choose to be happy or sad. It is completely your choice let no one deceive you. We are however allowed a period of intense self pity but not ever lasting self pity.
Is there nothing inspirational in your life at all. Why have you allowed your boss and your colleagues such power over you.
Do not give them all the poweritmakes soo much easier for them to make youfeel bad.
So chin up, smile wide and hope always

Goodness

That did come across as harsh, although I don’t believe you meant it that way. Clearly you have not read all of my posts or you would know that there are a great number of things in my life that are both positive and inspirational, and that I am someone who always strives to choose happiness. :) I think I’m not the only one to use 43T to pour out emotions that cannot be expressed anywhere else in my life due to my circumstances. We are none of us perfect, and occasionally when you are in a toxic environment for over 40 hours a week it can begin to wear on your soul a little, and it is wonderful to be able to vent where there are others to listen. I do appreciate your encouragement.

Wow...

Clearly you recognize that the words coming out of your typing fingers were pretty ugly, for you to have added “not to sound insenstive or anything.”

It seems a shame that someone typing a message of “cheer up” doesn’t seem to realize that being incredibly and across the board insulting probably isn’t going to get her/his message across very effectively.

Your EST-inspired techniques of berating someone who already feels like she gets too much crap from the people around her is probably not a good way to get her to smile and hope for the world.

Just sayin’.

Tarrador had fun, while it lasted

Dragonfly, I have read...

a lot of your posts, and I can say without fear of contradiction that your life is positive, wonderful and inspirational not just to you, but to others who encounter you. I read you posts about how unhappy you are in your job and never suscribed it to an “orgy of self pity”. You have had doubts, fears, anger and disappointment, but never did I perceive you in a corner feeling sorry for yourself.

I’m glad this woman is making your boss look like a fool. He has let you down many times by failing to provide leadership and management. I’m glad you are getting and feeling the validation you deserve. I understand what you are feeling and it isn’t self-pity. You have shown great discipline and patience, gauging the responsibilities you had and where your job fit in. You have not helplessly “allowed” you boss and co-workers power over you, beyond the extent we all allow others to have some power over us. You have tried to bridge the distance between them and you, with them not reaching out and you overextending in your kind way. Sometimes when you overextend you break a little. So, let some steam out through those cracks. Its okay to vent as mercilessly as you need to.

You’ve got soooo many good things going on in your life right now, this issue with your job can’t help but get swept away in the rising tide. Rather than, “chin up, smile, hope”, how about open your arms and prepare to receive the wonderful things coming to you because of the wonderful energy you’ve generated.

Open your arms wide.

Tarrador, stop being so brilliant!

(You make me feel inadequate that my words consistently fall flat next to yours.)

I can say without fear of contradiction that your life is positive, wonderful and inspirational not just to you, but to others who encounter you.

Yes.

That.
