Do not consume after this date! 1 month ago

Why is that when you buy a food item it either says, “Best if used by”, or “expiration date….” It’s kind of vague really. If I buy something in January 2009, and it says “Best if used by October 2010”. And it doesn’t smell bad, taste bad, or look bad, can I still eat it in August 2010, or does the fact that it’s been opened mean it’s no good by then? If I don’t open it at all until January 2011, will it still be good?

And what about meat? I know in it’s refrigerated state, it has to be eaten within a few days, maybe a week at the very most, but what if you freeze it?

I mean why don’t they just say “Do not consume after this date.”? And for stuff like meat or cheese, maybe 2 dates, for refrigerated or frozen.

I mean, isn’t this what we really want to know? Not when it’s “best by”. But, how long before we can’t eat the stuff.

Usually

If a product remains unopened it is good long past the ex date. Settling or other changes may occur. Yogurt for example is good for about a month or more. Eggs gradually get worse. You’ll taste the difference, I know from experience.

Frozen foods such as meats, veggies, and other processed foods could be prone to listeria, a food-borne illness which can grow in temperatures as low as 4 degrees fahrenheit. Thus, the longer the food stays frozen the greater the chance for listeria.

I should look up "Listeria", I've never heard of it before.

That is interesting.

what I have learned..

is that if it says “Best before” than it is better before that date.. probably ok to eat it.. just not advisable.
If It says “Expires on..” then don’t eat it.. it is expired and NOT advisable to eat – you generally see “expiry” dates and meat and the like.. best before on most everything else;)

kind of thing is what I want to do for a career…hopefully a little more related to computers though!

But you’re right, it is confusing!

Feeling Hopeful wonders why the titles of many of my entries lately have been numbers.

Eggs

My in-laws have free range chickens and they have taught me that eggs actually last a long time. You can tell by the yolk. If it looks firm and shiny and roundish, the egg is good. If the yolk looks flatter and duller and less firm, the egg is starting to get bad.

I’ve noticed packaged stuff can sometimes still be ok after the use by date, but I’m afraid to eat meat that’s past it’s date unless I’ve frozen it.
