I have a lot of design ideas. Right now, I’d really like to build a high quality solid wood storage unit. It would actually be two modular units that can be repositioned for multiple uses. I would more than likely use it as an entertainment unit at first. I want a really modern streamlined look with a dark chocolate brown finish. I’ve done some research and I think I need to use Walnut. However, I’m having a difficult time finding the wood I need since I think I’m needing boards approximately 2 inches thick, and 15 inches wide. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Why Walnut? I used to build furniture with my dad, walnut is really hard….. have you thought about using a walnut veneer? you could put it over your shelving and have solid posts…. if your looking for wood try the web there are som places that specialize in exotic woods. Take a look a some koa wood you might like it….
Breakin' it Down
I looked up Koa wood on e-bay. Looks good, but I’d have to see it finished to know if it’s what I want. I don’t know how to explain what I’m looking for. For some reason I think of Pottery Barn and Pier One concerning the finish. The actual piece of furniture would be more modern. But I really want that smooth dark chocolaty brown finish… to where almost have to look for the grain. Pretty much the exact opposite of oak. I’ve seen some Doors made of Mahogany that look really close to what I want. They’re just a little too red. I was told that mahogany or mahogany stain would be the browner look that I’m wanting. I thought about veneer, but haven’t found anything that would work for me. My trouble with the wood is the dimensions. It needs to be about 1 1/2 to 2 inches thick, while also being 45” long and 15” thick… approximately. It’s basically a modular piece made of 15”x15” cubes. I can’t find any lumber of that dimension. Plus it’s all really expensive, especially if I buy on the web where I have to pay shipping as well. The Koa I’ve seen so far intrigued me because the dimensions were what I was looking for. I’m just not sure how the finish would look. I’m thinking it’s pretty light. I want something dark. I’ve attached a picture of a coffee table that’s close to my desired style and look.
