set aside food storage
Changing habits

Buying a lot of food to set up a 1 year supply seems to be what many people consider the big challenge in this. Others seem to have troubles finding the right storage space.

For me, the challenge has been to change my habits so that I actually use what I store. The old adage, “Use it or lose it” is true for food storage too. If you don’t eat what you store, much of it will eventually spoil.

Store what you use and use what you store

My favorite quote, and the best advice I know is, “store what you use and use what you store.” You’ll find more details about this in the downloadable huge book in PDF format, “Food Storage Cooking School” from http://extension.usu.edu/files/foodpubs/fn503.pdf

We can get so caught up in trying to store the “right food” according to somebody else’s suggested list that we forget that simple principle. I advise folks to evaluate what foods they are buying regularly. That (or some version of it) is what they need to store. And go from there.

Thanks

I enjoyed the extension article and have saved it for future reference. I’ll be referring to it to do an inventory soon.

I really appreciate you taking the time to send the link and add your comments about the “right food”. That just makes sense, but it’s so easy to get caught up in getting what is on some list that we overlook our own taste. For example, for me, powdered milk is fine, but my wife wouldn’t touch it with a 10-foot pole.
