Thanks Ray. I’ve started using Nippon Voice blog, which I’ve found to be very helpful. It teaches vocab that is time-relevant, so it can be put to use immediately. I learned a lot over the New Year about osechi ryori, and was able to talk about it while eating it. Check it out:

(I wonder why the speaker chooses to end many of her sentences with ですよ. It sort of reminds me of the way an adult might talk to children. Though it would be nice if a native could confirm that.)
