make dandelion wine
First racking

Five gallons. Required 2 1/2 gallons of dandelion heads. Took damn near all afternoon to pick that many. It’s been in the carboy for about six weeks. Next racking should be in about two months or so. Snuck a taste in transfer. It’s definitely got a unique flavor.

Comments:

I have

actually tasted this stuff – at a nearby winery in the Amana Colonies in Iowa. I’ve tasted worse. :)

So, I’m curious what prompted you to try this? On a vendetta against the dandelions in your yard?

Btw, when you go to Mt. Rushmore (which I see is on your list), you really should also make a trip to the nearby Crazy Horse monument. I loved that even more.

It's supposed to be the best...

...or at least the best ‘country wine’ you can make. Or so I’ve heard. It’s a very old-fashioned wine and I’ve got an old soul, so it made sense. I’ve been home brewing wine for several years and always wanted to give dandelion a shot. My yard has no dandelions so I had to go down to the large park near my home that has rolling fields full of them.

As for Rushmore, I’ve heard of the Crazy Horse monument.. and I’ve also heard that it’ was started 50 years ago and STILL isn’t finished. Erosion works faster!

LOL!

True, erosion is faster, but the reason it’s not done is one of the reasons I fell in love with the place – they do not feed a the public trough. There is a family-run foundation (almost all the descendants of the couple who began the project) which solely funds and oversees the construction. Uncle Sam has tried to take over, but of course had conditions, and that was unacceptable to the family, and I have such respect for them.

And from an artistic standpoint, it’s so much more exciting than a bunch of dead presidents!

Just don’t try to run the marathon there – it’s the most poorly organized race I’ve ever been to.

Hudzo has gotten 8 cheers on this entry.
