make lists of things that interest me, and perhaps share them here, but only if i feel like it, and in the process, write an extremely long and unwieldy-to-read goal, thereby amusing myself (read all 6 entries…)
List of Books I have read or am Reading in 2006 3 years ago

1. The Kite Runner – Khaled Hosseini (done)
2. Freakonomics – (just started)
3. Anil’s Ghost – Michael Ondaatje (started)
4. The Nurture Assumption – Judith Rich Harris (a maddening book that makes sense in a scary way… so far)
5. Until I Find You – started a couple weeks ago, but at a standstill right now…

Anil’s Ghost

So funny to see your list. I want to read the Kite Runner. I tried Anil’s Ghost and couldn’t get anywhere with it. I used to perservere and finish anything I started -but now I am like the lady of leisure with the box of chocolates- taking a bite and having no trouble throwing them back if they don’t please me immediately.

ya...

i’m finding Anil’s Ghost tough going, but… then… i come up on a passage that is so beautiful, i realize it might just be worth it.

i think i’ve gotten spoiled with all the more relatively easy to read stuff that i’ve been reading…

hmm

here’s the passage that impressed me enough to decide to persevere, even if it’s very slow and i do read other things in the meantime for that immediate gratification:

‘There was a monk,’ Sarath said, ‘He and his brother were the best teachers in my life—and it was because they taught me when I was an adult. We need parents when we’re old too… he’d somehow help me become simpler, clearer to myself. Narada was a great laugher. He would laugh at your foibles. An ascetic.”
(p. 46)

Appreciate the philosophy

You have to admit that it takes a couple of readings (especially out of context) to latch onto it.

I am reading something called “Transit of Venus” by Shirley Hazzard. The writing is layered and kind of self-conscious—it seems like its trying to be very posh…(I think I am using that correctly remembering my London days.) but lovely in spite of that. I am a plot girl and this one is catchy about two Australian sisters.

it sounds

intriguing… do post back after you’re done! :)
