all i can knit is straight lines. I don’t even know how to change colors. I’d really like to knit something cool, besides just a scarf. Again, I haven’t knitted in a year, so I am not even sure I remember how.

Good for you!
I was in your situation. I had learned to knit, but I wanted to make more than dumb squares or scarves. The first thing you should do if you want to get back in the “Knitting Game” is decide what it is you want to make. If the idea of a blanket or a hat seems like it would be to much work consider making something like a mock quilt. Just knit many colorful squares, and then sew them together. Once you know what you want to make, go out to a knitting or craft store and ask for a pattern (fit to your ability – beginner, expert..) for that project. Also, get enough wool and the proper equipment (needles) so that you can’t make up excuses.
The next thing you need to do is start. This was the hardest part for me, since I had kinda forgotten. There are so many internet web sites and books out there that have great diagram’s and really cool projects. Look for something like that to help you get started.
Once you have learned the basic stitches (Knit and Purl.. don’t worry about any other more complicated stitches if you don’t need them for the project you chose, it will only complicate the matter) it’s time to start your project. This is the part that may sound dumb.. but here it goes: Get a calender and set yourself days to knit and goals. Like, on May the 14th I will knit 10 rows. It makes it easier to get it done, and you can see the progree just a little bit of time will take..
Lastly. Celebrate! Even if your hat looks like a coaster, or your scarf looks like a blanket, celebrate the fact that you went out and tried. Once you are done your first project, you can see what level of tensity you like the stitches to be etc.
Hope this helps! Let me know if there are anymore questions.
