Finish the novel I'm writing
Untitled 3 years ago

Two steps forward and one step back. Every day I hover over my clunky lap-top and stare at the blank page. Sometimes I manage to type a few words, or a few paragraphs, or even a few pages. The next day I’m dissatisfied with half of what I’ve done the day before. I’ve managed to write over 30K words, which is pretty impressive considering all the upheaval in my life in recent days. Too bad I’m only satisfied with about half of it.

What are you writing about?

Thats a hard question to answer

I suppose the best way to put it is I’m writing what I care most about, and I’m telling a story that has come to me, demanding to be told.

I’ll give you some advice, even though you didn’t ask for it. Keep going. Don’t worry about whether you’re satisfied or not, not yet. The most important thing is to get that first draft out of you. It may be hundreds and hundreds of pages long, and you may only keep half of it. The most important thing at this point is to get that first draft out! I wish I were in your shoes. It’s exciting, no? The act of discovery is rejuevenating. Anyway, don’t worry about writing too much or whatever. I wrote over 200,000 words on my novel (in different stages, what I thought was the final draft was 120,000, and now it looks like I’ll be able to tell the whole thing in 85-90,000. It’s different for everyone, but this kind of thing is not uncommon.)

Anyway, I have an almost complete faith in the writing, and I think that the best time to do it is when you have a lot of superficial stuff going on in your life. If you let it, it starts to act as a filter. So keep going.
