Go to a hairdresser and let them do what ever they want
Chickens 3 years ago

I’ve done this four times in the past dozen years at various places throughout the US. So as I sit down, they ask me what I want done and I tell them that I don’t know, don’t care but want them to do what they think will make me look the best. Then they freak. It’s like they don’t know what to do. Now I admit it could be scary when I’ve got beautiful long curly locks down to the middle of my shoulder blades. But at the same time, I’m looking for a change. I want something different, something I wouldn’t have thought of on my own. I don’t want some timid hairdresser who is afraid to cut more than a half-inch off. I could do that myself, and do more than that. My recommendation is to call ahead and discuss whether or not the salon has a stylist that will be comfortable crafting a new look for you.

I've had this work once

I got this weird hairdresser that was probably in his fifties that told me he would get monthly videos about the latest styles so he actually made a recommendation, and me, being the daring one that I am somedays said go ahead and it actually turned out pretty good.

Lucky You

That’s really cool that he felt comfortable in making a recommendation and you going for it. I wish I had that kind of luck. Whenever I try, they always have to ask tons of questions so I finally have told them exactly how to cut it instead of them just doing it.

what really cracks me up

is when you go to a new hairdresser and ask them for something completely radical…it’s funny to watch them flip out…and the entire time, they keep asking, are you sure? are you REALLY sure you want it this short???

My hairdresser told me

that one of the problems they have is that people say they want radical change when they’ve had a relationship breakdown or something, as it’s a symbolic way of severing links with the past. But then there’s nearly always an emotional response, and that’s hard to handle. She was once chased by a client with a pair of scissors after she’d cut the hair short as requested! Perhaps that’s why they flip?!

Interesting

I guess I can see their point. pun intended

If I’m asking for their advice on what would make me look better, I would expect them to be able to give it instead of me wanting to yank the scissors from their hands and do it myself.
