Watch all my VHS tapes and get rid of them. (read all 15 entries…)
HUGE job

Wow. I haven’t even made an entry here in 2 years plus. Shameful.

Today I threw myself into a VHS tape frenzy and weeded out a big box layers deep, at least 50-60, and I’m not done yet. Once this box is full and out the door, I’ll check this off my list, even if I have a few left to watch (and I’ll be keeping a few I love and can’t replace). We also recently returned a big bag of movies we’d borrowed.

It’s easier realizing just how much space they take up and knowing many of the ones I’d watch again are shown on cable from time to time, can be downloaded for free, borrowed, or rented. It feels good to take a big chunk out of this longtime goal.

This is a tough one

but it sure feels GOOD when it’s done.

It’s getting increasingly difficult to offload your old video tapes – where I live, they can’t be recycled, and the charity shops don’t want them any longer. It was noticeable at the car boot sale I went to recently that most stalls had a big box of videotapes, and it didn’t look like any of them were sold by the end of the day. I guess DVDs are relatively cheap these days, especially older stuff, or as you say, films can be downloaded, rented or whatever for free or next to nothing.

Donate them

that’s what I did … don’t watch them, you got plenty of other stuff to do (i.e. decluter). Just donated them to your local public library. They can sort them and keep them, and if you ever want to watch any of them again, you can go there a borrow them. The kid ones I donated to a daycare … they’ll get some good use there.

TwitchTX is feeling great after a 2 hour walk!

Thanks for this idea!

I was just going to take mine to GoodWill, but the Public Library is a MUCH better idea!

steven000029 is actually living in a hotel. oh crap.

ive boxes full of old video tapes, what i will never get rid off.
on most of them are boxing matches, i recorded from tv, the first fight i ever recorded was in 1986, yes, i really am that old.
i can’t bring myself to throw them out, as i just value them too much, and are a reminder of my school years, getting up at 3 in the morning to tape the mike tyson fights, and watching them with my dad.
bad news for any girlfriend, wherever i live, the boxes full of vhs video tapes come with me.
all the best, steve.

Deterioration

“Time is a bitch.” VHS tapes deteriorate as time goes by. After 10 years the image quality starts to plummet, unless you keep them in a controlled environment. If you have them in the attic or some other not as nice place, they deteriorate even faster.
What you need to do is transfer them to digital (DVD or directly into a hard drive) if you ever hope to watch them again. Also, technology is bound to leave you behind and leave you without a way to play them. For examples, you can’t find Reel-to-reel machines, 5 1/2 or 3 1/4 floppy drives, 8-track players or even cassette players. I had some Super film transfered into VHS that I now need to transfer to DVD.
You can do it yourself: they sell VHS to DVD machines for a couple hundred bucks, vs. $30 for every 2 hour tape a professional service will charge you.
Like I said, time is a bitch … or is it just entropy … :-)
Good luck.
