Pretty good player, sad no WMP DRM capability and iTunes is annoying

I’ve had a lot of problems with iTunes on my PC, which is annoying. But I do like some of its features like Smart Playlists.

The iPod itself is a nice little player (it’s an iPod video 60 GB). The things I like least about it are that it can’t play Windows Media Player files and if the WMP’s have DRM then there is no legal awy to even convert them so they’ll play on the iPod. This means that the digital audio books available from most sources other than iTunes won’t work for me. :(

It’s other weakness: charging only from the PC. It is lame that they don’t include an AC charger anymore. Now you have to use a computer that is turned on and running the Ipod driver in order to charge your iPod. You can buy an AC adapter, but of course it costs extra even though you paid $400 for the latest, greatest iPod.

Prevalence of WMA DRM vs AAC DRM

I don’t recall blaming Apple. Did you hear me say that?

DRM makes sense since creators need ways to protect their work, but interoperability does suffer. Specifically my complaint (to no one in particular) is that I am unable to get audio books fro any sources other than iTunes (almost as expensive as buying them on CD) and Audible.com (also expensive and has the whole membership BS).

I am a library user and my library is savvy enough to offer digial audio books, but since they are protected WMAs I can’t use them. And a library can’t distribute content without taking reasonable steps to preserve copyright so not using DRM isn’t an option for them.

Although I am nnot blaming Apple, it would be nice if they would support protected WMAs since it would benefit their customers. I know they don’t want to boost adoption of WMA DRM, I’m not very sympathetic since the customer suffers.

Or how about someone makes a protected MP3 format that Apple and Microsoft can both support, even if each prefers its own proprietary format.
