Jerky...

is not junk food (unless it’s loaded with sugar, you gotta watch that.)

I keep an individual pack of salmon jerky in the car. It’s expensive, yes, so I am not tempted to snack on it, but when my body is howling that I need to EAT but there is no time or worse, nothing but fast food is available, I can eat something quick and nutritious. I think of it my “break glass in emergency” food.

emergency eats

When I was a student and had to carry snacks in my bag all day, I found that dates and almonds made a very portable, tasty, and relatively nutritious emergency food.

Salmon jerky sounds very good too, but as you say, it’s expensive. I buy dates and almonds in the bulk bins of my grocery store, and can get quite a large bag for not too much money. And it lasts forever, so if you don’t need it you can just leave it in the glove box or whatever.

Oh, also the dates are really concentrated (but surprisingly complex) carbs, which is sometimes what you really need when you’re running out of energy. Any sort of nut or dried fruit could be substituted, of course.

Julie Kane needs a good drink.

I wonder if there's any way

to turned canned salmon into jerky? Because canned salmon is quite cheap. I’ve been thinking about a food dehydrator. I love love LOVE jerky.

making jerky

Dehydrating food is really pretty easy. Here’s a quick vid by Alton Brown about how to turn a box fan into an efficient food dehydrator.#

I still have to guess that pound for pound canned salmon is probably more expensive than whole, though, isn’t it? But then I wouldn’t know. I never eat fish.

But the Blow Hard 4000 design is still pretty good. I would use it to make beef jerky myself. Or maybe if turkeys are still insanely cheap for holiday time I might make turkey jerky (which is at least fun to say).
