The Cuddly Illusion

I think one of the things that really appeals to me about lions is that they give the outward appearance of being quite cuddly while they would, in fact, rip your head off in a trice!

I don’t believe I would ever be one of those people who imagines that they can make friends with a lion. You know the type, we hear about them on the news occasionally when the friendship making goes horribly, and predictably, wrong.

Drunk people breaking into zoos seems to feature in this category, as do people who step out of landrovers to have their pictures taken with the lions in the background!!

I saw a brilliant documentary recently about Joy Adams and her husband (John??) and the story behind the book (and film) Born Free. With the Adam’s help the actors shot the film in amongst the various lions which of course makes it look as if the lions are genuinely tame.

One of these lions was called ‘Boy’ and he subsequently tried to eat the young son of one of his guardians. Then, some years later, he did eat an African man who was a part of the ‘lion team’.

On the other hand there is the story of Christian the lion which, if you watch the youtube footage, will make you cry. And who couldn’t love Clarence? It would be very hard to be afraid of a cross-eyed anything, even if it was a savage beast of the Serengeti.

Still, if I ever fulfill this goal and see a lion at close quarters I hope I will be smart enough to remember that, in their eyes, I resemble little more than a chicken Jalfarezei with pilau rice and an onion bargee.

Comments:

I think

one of the things I love best about C.S. Lewis’s Narnia tales is the imagery of Aslan. Obviously there is the respect he commands, but there’s also his tenderness. The ability to get so close to this awe-inspiring creature that you can actually cuddle into his soft mane with an unburdening sigh is just so appealing.

But one of my favorite movies features lions in a much different light (the more chicken Jalfarezei vein) – The Ghost and the Darkness, with Val Kilmer.

It would be really cool to see one in the wild. God knows every time we’re at the local zoo they’re pretty scarce. I’m glad they have a nice, big environment including a cave, but it does kind of render them useless to the zoo-going public.

cuddling with a furry beast

I wonder what it is about the size and the fur that is so appealing. When my granddaughter was visiting, it was obvious she was more interested in our larger furrier dog with a big ruff of fur than his sleeker sister. Girl dog is far gentler, yet this tiny girl wanted to play with the rambunctious boy. He toned himself down quite a bit for her, too. She wasn’t talking yet, so I just had to watch and wonder. Here they are, dogs keeping a close watch on the little girl.

How adorable!

I just love that!

That is..

.. such a cool photo! Isn’t it wild how dogs seem to instinctively know to calm right down with small children. Well, some of them anyway. German Shepherds are the bomb too.

Narnia

Would you believe I have never read or seen Narnia. I think it’s something that will have to be addressed.

Truly!

Though I preferred the books, as usual, the movies (so far) are fairly well done, also.

Mad TV, a comedy show like Saturday Night Live here in the states, had a great sketch about the fawn after the first one came out. :)
