I’ve started my super secret sock for my dad. I originally was going to double strand 2 very contrasting yarns together, but when I swatched it, I didn’t like the fabric it gave me. It was too thick and wasn’t nearly as ugly as I hoped for. So, I just decided to go for it with the different yarns I bought and to just stripe it randomly. I’m doing them toe-up and I’m almost to the heel. I’ve kinda hit a wall ‘cause I’m nervous about that first heel. It’s a short row heel, so it won’t be too bad, but I’m nervous all the same. If I don’t finish this sock soon though, I’ll never get the second one done! I don’t want to fall into a single sock syndrome! lol!

Socks are awesome!
Don’t be afraid of the heel!!! You can do it!!! Just take it slow and concentrate on the instructions (i.e don’t try to do it while watching TV)...
oh, and SSS isn’t so bad… just try to always make socks in coordinating colors so that they all kind of go together … that’s what I do hehehe
I have about an inch left to go on the first one now. There’s about 7 or 8 inches of 3X3 ribbing on this baby! That’s a lot of ribbing! Plus, I’ve only been able to work on it when I’m not at home so it’s taken even longer! I’m giving him the first one for Father’s Day. Then, it shouldn’t take long for me to make the second one. I’m actually excited to make the second one so that I can work out all those little areas that aren’t quite perfect. For example, it needs a bit of a wider toe next time so that it fits even better. Plus, I’ll be able to take proper measurements for it. But I like the idea of making similar socks so that they all go together. Smart thinking!

ribbing is your best friend when it comes to socks … ribbing all the way down leg helps them fit better and stay up.
I finally broke down and bought the laminated card called “Sock it to ya” that has measurements based on shoe size. that way I can actually surprise someone with socks if only know their approx. shoe size… kind of gives away the surprise if you ask to measure their foot hehe…
Let me know how things go with those socks … you can catch me on yahoo messenger as thistlechick73 =)
I just finished the first one! Yea! I could have went on for about another inch, but decided that it was plenty tall. I can’t wait to go home and take a picture.
I was lucky I made my first sock for my dad. We wear almost the same size shoe, so I figured as long as it almost fit me, it should be perfect for him. He wears a half size larger than me (I have monster feet for a woman) and it’s just the tiniest bit loose. I’m hoping it fits him as well as it fits me. I’m weaving in my million and 4 ends right now, but needed a break. Did I mention it’s a horribly striped ugly sock? It’s not as ugly as I had hoped it would be, but it’s got lots of fun stripes. :)
I used a size 5 needle to help me bind off loosely since I’ve heard that is the most common mistake made with a first sock. It’s almost too loose, but when it’s on, it looks pretty good. Again, I can’t wait to take pics and give it to him for Father’s Day. :)
Oh btw, I’m lee_jo79 on Y!M. I’m just not at home to add you right now. :)
*cheers*
I’m sooo proud of you!
I remember my first “pair” of socks… I was so poor at the time that I was making everything out of that cheap cotton dishcloth yarn … I don’t recommend making socks out of this yarn! Those socks are so stiff… especially after washed …
I also made striped socks on my first go… (long before I discovered self-striping yarn)... and to keep myself from getting bored, I made each sock different and tried different heel/toe techniques on each one … the only thing they have in common is that they are both socks and striped =D
