It was a Sunday morning and my Grandfather, who was the church custodian, was also the bell ringer for St. Mary’s Catholic Church which was right across the street from his house on West High Street in Springfield, Ohio. That morning the priest got angry with him because he was late ringing the bell for 9:00 mass.

He was late ringing the bell because his 6th baby had just been born. That baby was my Mother, Mary Elizabeth Borchers

Happy Birthday Mom!!!

Comments:

Poetry Man Why, yes! I am a nerd.

Hope your Mom

has a great birthday, that the dinner you’re having for her is wonderful, and that you stay sane through it all.

Thanks Poetry Man!!!

I have been cooking all day and almost done. I even have an extra dish going that Luna_Girl told me about. I had some extra stuff and she told me about some bacon wrapped asparagus thingys. DONE!!! I evne convinceed her that before we threw them in the oven we out to sprinkle them with Brown Sugar . . . DONE!!!

My Mom has only called me once with an annoying issue. I need to not put the strawberries on the short cake biscuit before I get there or it will be too soggy . . .

sigh

Collectorofcats can hardly wait for the asparagus to pop up so it will be truly Spring

Great Story!

Holly is not doing so good on getting things done!

Bell ringing?

Have you ever thought of learning bell ringing? It’s so much fun—and a nice way to honour your grandfather. I’m learning and really enjoy it. Here’s a blog entry I wrote about it last week

And if you want to learn, visit the National website for a bell ringing tower near you

My Grandfather was not part of a bell ringing

ensemble. He was The Bell Ringer at the church. He pulled some rope that was connected to a bell in the steeple that was to be rang when masses were starting.

I don;t think they have these people anymore. I think that now it is done with a recoding and a loudspeaker.

However, I do know what you are talking about and yes, it does look fun (and maybe a little stressful at times)
