Answer the "50 Questions That Will Free Your Mind". (read all 50 entries…)
Q9. To what degree have you actually controlled the course your life has taken?

There are things that I have chosen to pursue from college to specific jobs to becoming an EMT first then a paramedic. I’ve controlled my personal interests and the way I spend my time. I’ve chosen to travel to different places including all 50 states and to Australia. I’ve chosen to run various races.

There are definitely things that I have had no control over. The company I worked for went into bankruptcy after a financial scandal. I chose to remain with the company, but when they no longer needed me I had no control over that. I had no control over when family members died. I have no control over the weather.

It’s hard to define exactly what degree I’ve controlled my life since there’s a lot of external things that no one can control. I would say that I’ve controlled much of what I can control, and controlled how I react to external things that I have no control over.

I guess the answer to this question...

for me is very similar to your answer. Until a few years ago I had not realized that I had been allowing others to control where my life went, what activities I was engaged in, etc. I wasn’t taking time for myself and doing what was important to me unless others wanted to do that, too. A friend I had made through this site, who is no longer here, pointed that out quite bluntly to me during one of our conversations. It made me sad to realize that At age 30 something I had not steered the course of my life more than I had to that point. Now I try to balance it out better. I also always keep the Serenity Prayer in mind, too, because there are both things we have control over in life, and things we don’t. It is beneficial to us when we know the difference between the two!
