German time!

I’ve finally started learning German. I have no prior knowledge of the language nor of any other Germanic language besides English. I’ve been using Michel Thomas’ language course which is really nice, but sometimes I get confused because he speaks German too fast. I don’t if it’s because he’s a Polish war survivor thus being used to German during the War II or if it’s because German is really fast or if I’m just too dumb to get used to it. His students obviously can’t pronounce a thing which makes things worse. Anyhow, it seems that I can’t pronounce ich and nicht too. :( I’ve been looking for some videos on Youtube to see if I can learn how to pronounce it, but everytime I try to pronounce it, it sounds different – and I don’t know which version is right. Oh well… I will try some sites focused on people learning German to see if I can find something useful.

ich und nicht.

don’t worry, it just takes lots of practice speaking the language outloud. it will come with time. when I speak quickly I still say ‘isch’, but if i concentrate and slow down a little, I can say it perfectly. It’s not so much from your throat, like native english speakers think! it’s got to do with your tongue positioning and properly pushing the air through. :) here’s what I do: make sure the sides of your tongue are pushed against your TOP molars, then bite a little with bottom molars, as if you are pinning the sides of the tongue down to keep it immobile. then try saying the words, ich, nicht, dich, mich. keeping the air flow moving forward. german language requires more muscle toning than english, and i promise it just takes time and practice. and if you dont master it, people just find your accent cute! there’s nothing wrong with having an accent, infact sometimes it’s a great way to meet boys. :P hope this helped!
