Dreams and Goals without action = nothing, nada. 4 years ago
As I visit around this site, I see what is so common in our society of entertainment and instant gratification. Examples?
  • People who see 43things.com and never participate by signing up.
  • People who sign up, but only list goals without any entries.
  • People who enlist, set up goals with a few entries, and then abandon their projects.
To all of you above, your goals are just dreams and nothing
I’d LOVE for you to prove me wrong. Just look at some of my team-mates: They are MOVERS and SHAKERS, and will accomplish their goals because:
  1. They pay attention to the goals at least weekly
  2. They are interested in supporting others with their goals
  3. They break down a large goal into a bite-sized pieces (How do you eat an Elephant? One bite at a time)
  4. They stick with it
  5. They do not let anything stop them from heading towards their goals (that doesn’t mean they don’t fail). If they fail, they try another approach, try another tactic, try another strategy, etc.

If you’re going to bother to list 43things, you might as well try actually DOING some of them.

Comments:

While I gererally agree with what you’ve said here, I feel compelled to point out that, in all fairness, just because someone hasn’t posted or kept current with their list doesn’t always mean they’re not doing anything about it.

For instance, on my list of 100 Things, I think about that dang list at least three or four times a day, come up with some things to add, but by the time I sit down at the computer, I’ve forgotten them! For me, the point there is to practice thinking about what makes me happy as a way to focus on the good things in my life, not to reach 100 for the sake of reaching 100, posting it on the internet and then moving on.

So, while I agree that you won’t reach your goals unless you take active steps to get there, it’s pretty harsh to accuse those who don’t post of having empty dreams. Doncha think?

I stand chastised. . . and yet

The point of this community is not just individual lists. What this site allows for is for people to
  • set goals
  • track them for their own sake
  • share their experiences with others (both successes and struggles)
  • encourage (cheers and comments)
  • be encouraged (cheers and comments)
  • see what others are doing to meet their goals, what obstacles they’ve met and overcome, etc.
  • have challenging responses (like yours) that help focus and refine our thoughts.

Of course, none of these is REQUIRED. However, to the extent that you participate in these activities, your goals and the goals of others are forwarded.

Otherwise, why not just keep a list on paper at home?

You are completely right, Buzzy, in saying that I can’t always assume no entries = no activity or progress. Yet, I’m pretty confident that those who are spending 1/2 hour a day “playing” on this site are the ones making the most progress.

Thanks again for helping me hone my thoughts on this one. I take people who challenge my positions as my stronges allies. You can ALLWAYS find people to agree with you, which accomplishes . . not so much.

good point that..

...about the 100 things being an empty number without the exercise of focusing on what makes us happy. it is rather silly to steal those moments for writing only (as a save in memory function) and not live them up!

i will watch myself when i’m happy, and think i’m happy – it can fit in 100 things – but hey! i’m happy! ;)

Timothy has gotten 1 cheer on this entry.
