Twin Peaks - Season 1

Finished! But I’m pretty upset about the whole situation. For a start, I missed the last 1/4 of episode 6, as the DVD had a fault and it just wouldn’t play – I even tried multiple players. My other complaint (which isn’t really a complaint at all) is that now I just want to watch season 2! That show is so very good.

High rating. I’m super impressed. Kyle MacLachlan is fantastic as Agent Dale Cooper. Although I’ve got some questions about the show – I’m after some public opinion on them…

  • What’s the significance of coffee in the show? Is it important at all, or is it just a drink?
  • What is the significance of the soap opera “Invitation to love”?

I find it very difficult to understand underlying themes and social commentary in movies/tv shows. I need a bit of help.

Keep In Mind

David Lynch uses the logic of dreams in his work and while some things have significance, it’s often fruitless to think too hard about the symbolism. He notoriously avoids explaining his work.

He once said he’s really happy when people don’t analyse his work and just “go with it”. On the other hand, things seem to recur in his work or have a “completeness” to them that’s very intriguing.

He often explains his film-making technique as the “eye of the duck”. Explaining that if you were God and you had to decide where the eye went on a duck, the natural place to put it would be the side of it’s head because it “feels” right. The beak and the wing and the feet are too busy, but there’s a blank space just there waiting for it.
