But what exactly is Broadband in relation to DSL? I have never been able to figure it out.
I think that DSL is a type of broadband
As are Cable modems. So broadband is the feature, and DSL and cable modems are the implementation.

Broadband is an informal collective term for technologies that can provide internet access to widely-spread subscribers and are significantly faster than the previously standard modem dial-up access.
DSL and “Cable” are the most commonly implemented broadband technologies.

Yes, it does.
When broadband first came out, they never really said exactly what it was. Then suddenly they were talking about cable, then dsl, and I was never able to quite connect all the dots.
