Run (read all 27 entries…)
Annual Puke Fest?

My mom and I ran the Human Race 5K again this year. I looked back at last year’s entry and saw I puked during it which I did today too. Looks like this could be an annual puke fest for me.

My sinuses have been completely clogged for the past two days and I knew this wasn’t going to be a good race. I actually was on my pace for the first mile at 7:47, but I was already wheezing. I dropped to a walk to take a hit on my albuterol inhaler and started running again. I walked two more times before the half way mark with more hits of inhaler. At mile two I was already behind pace at 16:43.

Shortly after that I puked. Again it was just dry heaves like last year, but it’s still the same bodily process. After that I knew I shouldn’t take another hit on my inhaler, so I dropped to walks a couple more times when I just couldn’t breathe. Still I finished in 26:04 just 14 seconds longer than last year’s time, but almost a minute longer than my April race this year. And here I’d been hoping to break 24 minutes finally.

Mom improved her standing this year taking 2nd in her age category. Last year she was 3rd. Her time was 31 something.

Comments:

Gross.

But congrats on finishing. : )
As soon as I felt like puking, I’d have sat on the ground and waited for someone to carry me to the car!

And I hope you feel better.

Congratulations, Todd

But seriously, take it easy! I hope you feel better.

5K

is all about the puking.

I remember watching
little girls puking and
holding their hair out of
the way.

My daughter ran a 5K
with me in her pyjamas
(and puked) and told me
she had never seen so
many people puke.

I used to use Albuterol
before running – it helped.

Why does this happen? Does distance running make people nauseous? Or just some people? If so, I may reconsider my tentative goal to start a running program and stick to walking long distances…......LOL

There's a lot of excitement

before a 5K – it’s
fast and people are
amped up. The race is
essentially over before
the body has a chance to
warm up.

Experienced 5K runners
will go jog for about
15 – 20 minutes before
the race – maybe some
short sprints.

Lots of young people
run 5K and their bodies
aren’t accustomed to
distance running – it’s
a skill that the body
adapts to over time.

My favourite distance
is 10K – this is chiefly
what I run for maintenance
and I don’t really enjoy
long distance anymore. I’m
just stubborn and I want
to run a 100 miler so I’m
running my way up to a 100K
by next year and then doing
a 100 miler.

Then back to 10Ks and maybe
occasional 50K trail because
I love ‘em.

Endurance fest

Oh…so maybe it’s all that adrenaline making people sick? It makes sense that people would warm up first…...I can’t imagine not doing that. I’ve never been a runner per se. I mean I have jogged…..I have stamina and strength and am fit enough for long walks (I currently walk 4-7 miles a day) and yoga. I’d like to think I can work up the endurance for simple runs and by simple I just mean 20 or 30 minutes on a nice trail somewhere. I’d be glad to just be able to run a mile without stopping…...I dunno, we’ll see….....The thing that appeals to me about running at this point in my life isn’t even about physical fitness. I can’t explain it. It’s just calling to me. The puking part….not so much.

Pace

You’re definitely going about it the right way. I’ve been trying to increase my pace so that I can break a 24 minute 5K. One of my biggest problems in races is my pacing. I can’t judge how fast I’m running, but just compare myself to other runners. It makes me run faster than I should which kicks in my asthma. It’s so much easier when I’m running alone and not focusing on pace but just running for the sake of running.

wren You'll not see nothing like the mighty wren!

When I run 5K

and it’s just for running, at a pace that feels challenging but not terribly uncomfortable but is definitely not racing, it involves no puking whatsoever.

LOL! That’s good to know….

Temperature

This year and last year the temp for this 5K even at 8am was in the mid-80s and humid. This particular course is mainly uphill for the first half, so people are really pushing themselves. The winners usually come in around 17 minutes. Because it’s a short race, people try to push themselves from the start unlike longer races where you can build up from a slower pace.

I’ve never puked on longer races. I remember while climbing the 3 mile hill during my first marathon that I passed a couple runners while climbing the hill. I’d practiced running that hill for months so it didn’t bother me. My dad who was following in the car said that the guy I had passed turned and puked shortly after I had passed him. That day it had hit 90 too.

As long as you run at a pace you’re comfortable with and don’t try to improve your time or compete with others you shouldn’t have to worry about puking. I’m sure my heaves this time was due to hitting my inhaler too many times within too short a period of time, and the general heat/humidity of the day.

joie de vivre here only intermittantly

about mile 115

It was over 90 degrees F, humid. At mile 100 I had had a bbq beef sandwich. Mile 112 or so I had the 2nd biggest climb of the day. Took a big schlook of gatorade at the top.

A couple miles down the road, upchucked the lot, right over the right handlebar, without missing a pedal stroke.

Lessons:

don’t eat bbq beef sandwiches on long rides
IN OTHER WORDS
eat digestable foods on long rides

don’t drink gross crap like gatorade
IN OTHER WORDS
properly hydrate

the red gatorade I drank that day reminded me of the fruit punch I drank too much of at the Purim party when I was 5 – I puked up that too

Gatorade

I drank that on a half marathon at mile 3 one time and was sick to my stomach for the next three miles. I stick to water now.

puking

In the past 6 or 7 years I’ve gotten more sensitive to heat, and really have a hard time exercising outdoors in summer without getting a headache or sick to my stomach. I do think electrolytes, and wearing a hat, have helped.

That makes sense re pace, as with any physical exercise, yes…..I would not be able to run in that kind of heat. I do not do well in the heat, period. I’d sooner spend time in below zero temps as anything over 75, esp if any humidity is involved. I’ve tried to find a way to deal with my extreme sensitivity to heat over the years, but the best thing for me to do is to try to avoid it and stay well hydrated.

Tarrador had fun, while it lasted

Congrats to you...

for persevering. And congrats to your mom as well.
