Leave the country at least once a year
Untitled

The last couple years I’ve been pretty good at achieving this goal. Last year I went to Corsica. The year before that Peru & Scotland.

This year the friend I was going to travel with in August (to go backpacking in Canada) got into a serious accident and so wont be healthy enough to go.

The problem is that its difficult to find compatible friends who can travel for as long as I’d like to go, when I want to go, or travel the way I like to travel.

So what to do…

Comments:

I have that same friend problem! Although for them, it’s mostly a financial ordeal.

Yeah that’s definitely a problem too!

I’m thinking about perusing meetup.com Maybe I can find a travel group or backpacking group…

That sounds like a dating website, lol. I’ll go to Austria with you if you promise not to rape and murder me and abandon my body in the mountains xD I quite like my life.

It does kind of sound like it :) But really its just a place or network of local groups. Like group motorcycle rides, hikes, political discussions, movie groups, book clubs etc. I just joined a group called Hikeabull which is a local hiking group for people who like hiking with their pitbull dogs and who want to better socialize their dogs around other people and dogs.

Have you tried couchsurfing.org

No i haven’t personally tried it, have you? but i’ve heard very very good things…

i suppose that could be one way to feel less alone, traveling solo… is that kind of what you were thinking in bringing it up??

joie de vivre here only intermittantly

Corsica

what was it like?

Corsica

Loved it! Hiked the Gr20 which is an amazing, challenging trek! But there are tons of other things to do. Just be warned that after October a lot of the tourist resources shut down…

The island itself feels like Italy with Mediterranean architecture but with French culture thrown in. Few people speak English so its helpful to know French or Corse, but we somehow managed to get by. The food is again a mix of cultures. Corsica is well known for its charcuterie.

HIGHLY recommend going to Bonifacio (in the south) which is built on dramatic white cliffs… from there you can take a ferry out to the Iles de Lavezzi. They are a group of small, barren uninhabited granite islands with white sand beaches and crystal clear water. The train ride to Corte is also worth taking. Corte was the original capital and has a medieval flavor. Also enjoyed Calvi and Cap Corse. There are some nice hikes in Cap Corse. Like Sentier du littoral which passes some old Genoese towers and more beautiful white sand beaches.
