sleep in a capsule hotel.

japanese capsule hotels  — 3 years ago

I probably wouldn’t be able to because I think they are just for men. But when I can’t sleep I pretend I’m in one or a squirrel in a dray.

here’s a site w/pictures

looks like my nightmare. but good luck on that!

claustrophobic? I think tiny is soothing.

Whoa that's tiny

I’ve heard about those little buggers. I think I can relate to pretending to be a squirrel more.

Actually, I like to pile blankets all around me and throw the pillows over my head, open up the window on a cold winter’s night and pretend I’m hibernating. I haven’t decided which creature I should be but I’m sure it’s a cute furry mammal without an offensive odor.

I think my bed-nest must be at least 10 times more cozy than one of those capsules, but I don’t have access to a little red button.

it’s amazing how pretending to be a squirrel or hibernating bear can help to sleep.

zzzzzzzz!

But where do you put your stuff??

I think you check it at the counter of the hotel. In a locker. They have steam rooms and robes and stuff. but it’s mostly for drunken japanese businessmen

that is so weird

i can’t decide if it would be cool or claustrophobic, but definately fun to know about

i had no idea about these!

they remind me of the cages at the animal shelter :P but then, how much room do you really need to sleep…

have fun!

Capsule hotels -

They are mostly for men, but there are a few now that take women as well. They have separate dorms for men and women, so I didn’t see my boyfriend again until the next morning.

I stayed in one in Tokyo last week! It had an onsen (jnese bath) and sauna too :-)

Only thing is, they really can’t accommodate tourists very well – there are small lockers for your valuables, but no space for actual luggage. It’s more for locals who unexpectedly missed the last train home from downtown.

But if you can basically get by in Japanese (I’m pretty bad at it, but managed) it’s an interesting experience.

Thanks for the info!

I’d love to try one. Is it loud? Did you sleep well?

Pretty well

Didn’t hear any snorers, but the men’s dorm was on a different floor ;-)

A little bit of rustling around during the night because people arrive at all hours. But you have a little screen to pull down, and your head is at the far end, so the light from the hallway isn’t noticeable.

Ours was 3800yen for one night, which included use of the sauna/baths. For Tokyo that’s fairly inexpensive. I’d be willing to go again, except that it might be difficult to find one that takes women without doing a bit of online research first.

Also our capsule hotel was entirely in Japanese, there were no signs in English. I’ve since heard that some places are more tourist-friendly. I got by okay, but my boyfriend was frustrated because he just came to Japan to visit me and doesn’t know any Japanese.

The people there were quite nice though.
