Today's Target: Celebrity Stalkers

There’s a bunch of users and goals that I see have been flagged for deletion today. They are people who want to meet Dylan Sprouse or find his phone number. One of the very first goals I added when I created my account was Meet Chris O’Donnell. I recognize that it’s more of a fantasy goal than a real one, but JWillow has done it so it is possible. What makes these other goals any different than my own? Should I be flagged for deletion for wanting to meet Chris? Some of the comments I’ve seen are:

“celebrity stalking isn’t appropriate for 43Things”

“This isn’t appropriate and detracts from the purpose of 43things.”

“I don’t see any violations. Probably a young person dreaming.”

“no violations”

“spam”

I’m sorry, but how does wanting to meet a celebrity detract from 43Things purpose? It’s no more unrealistic than all the political goals, or those of us who wanted to lose 100 pounds (oh wait, I did that). It’s no more unrealistic of a goal than stopping masturbating.

It really pisses me off that people try to dictate to others what is and is not a valid goal based on their own belief of how the system should be used. It also pisses me off that the Robots themselves don’t take more of a stand in defining what is and is not acceptable.

Oops, just used all my cheers :(

I completely agree with you though, Todd :)

Well now...

let’s see? We usually want to meet people – be it a Celeb or “Not”, because we admire/like something about them.

So, if deleting goals of those who want to meet Celebs, then I may as well strike out wanting to meet people & make new friends!!!! Ridiculousand hey, who wouldn’t want to meet Chris O’Donnell – ha ha, just had to rub that in Todd, sorry!

The Rub

You know how jealous I am of your time with Chris. I’ll get to meet him eventually though. I’m already just one degree away from Chris since I know you and you know him.

Lisa forgot completely about NaPoWriMo!

One of my pre 43t goals

was to meet Gloria Steinem, and I did eventually. I don’t understand why it would be a problem goal. I worked with someone who grew up with Chris O’Donnell.

Oooh

And yet another connection through 43Things that could help me achieve my goal of meeting Chris. Of course any opportunity I have to spend time with you, Lisa, is always worth it.

Joe Goldberg Working hard

Plain ridiculous

We even had an entire website devoted to meeting other people! And when we shut it down, we told people to move their “want to meet” goals to 43things.

I realize we’re being lassez faire about defining what is and isn’t appropriate, and that does make voting in NW less clear-cut, but that’s just how it’s going to stay for the foreseeable future. The current system is working with a high accuracy rate.

Having said that, we welcome suggestions for improvements to the Community Guidelines. We can’t enumerate unacceptable content on an item-by-item basis, since by doing that we’d implicitly endorse everything we omit.

Agreed

The challenge is though that by not giving more explicit guidelines, you wind up with the people who flag things with comments like:

“celebrity stalking isn’t appropriate for 43Things”

“This isn’t appropriate and detracts from the purpose of 43things.”

I think it falls upon the Robot Coop to define the purpose of 43Things and what’s appropriate. The people who are making these kinds of judgments most likely aren’t utilizing the forum nor reading these entries to see this kind of discussion of what is appropriate.
