simplify my life
"Change the way you look at things, and the things you are looking at change." - Ernest Holmes

Went ahead and Feng shui-ed my bedroom. This started innocently enough, just thought it would be a “fun little afternoon project”… oh, how wrong I was. After researching it quite a bit I came to realize that it actually involved a massive purging of my belongings. Which is fine – let’s be honest “less clutter, more chi” is a rally cry I can defiantly get behind!

I started small… anything broken was immediately tossed, unloved gifts or clutter was donated, and two brimming portfolio’s worth of sketchpads went to a coworker. Then it was time to take on the horrific task of conquering the closet. After losing 125+ lbs my closet definitely needed some TLC… when the dust had cleared over 80% of my closet was packed into three humongous Bags bound for the Rescue Mission.

The room already had excellent light and air quality, so after a tedious mapping of the energy in my home to balance the elements I shifted furniture and possessions until they conformed (more or less) to my bagua map. I won’t lie… I am pleased with the results.

Simplifying is a way of life, a cleansing act that enables one to move forward with fewer restrictions. I’ve always believed in simplifying, however it can sometimes seem a daunting task. My tip for those looking to attempt something similar is to look at everything and ask, “Do I really need it?” if not donate/trash it!

Question

Where did you find your information on Feng shui during your research? I’ve always been curious about it but have never really found adequate materials on what all is involved.

I hope you like the way your room has turned out, it sounds like you’re on the right path!

Thanks!

I took out a slew of books from the library. The one I liked best was, “Move Your Stuff, Change Your Life” by Karen Rauch Carter. Almost everything I read though stressed that Feng Shui is more of an art than an exact science but the fundamental aspects of it were the same no matter the source. I ended up following what seemed emphasized across the board and then adding what ‘felt right’ for my home. Good luck!
