I signed up for a SAT Verbal 1 Class. The class has lots of vocabulary. Two classes in one week. Tuesdays and Thursdays. We get tested on 80 words in the beginning of each class and I have been getting 80/80 on all of them. Many of the words have slipped from my mind. That’s not good. To remeber them the director of the academy suggested these VERY helpful tips.
1) Tape the flashcard of the word you don’t know in places you visit often.
2) There are iphone apps you can download (intellivocab is a good one. and Brainscape SAT vocab is good if you’re willing to pay 5 bucks but definitely its worth it.?
3)There are books you can buy that are meant for learning big words but put in a story format. So for example gives a story with loads of big words and on the side it defines the words. Comes in books… even comics!
4) Of course the great ad famous… mnuemonic device! Put your difficult word in a way that you remember it. Whether recording it and listening to it in the shower or drawing a picture of it. In the long run these help the best. No doubt.
An example of a mnuemonic device is apothecary. A person CARRIES (cary) a POT (pot) of medicine. Or belligerent. When the BELL (bell) rings the war starts. Belligerent means to engage in war or conflict.
I gotta start doing these to actually KEEP the words in my head :)
