:-( ..

Comments:

I hope that you feel better soon.

I have read that one of the cures for depression is to stand in front of a mirror and smile. I know this sounds weird but there have been studies in (I think) Harvard that showed that this cured something like 80% of those that were depressed, and that was compared to a lower percentage when using the top brand anti-depression drug.

Apparently this treatment works because when you physically smile (even though you may not feel like wanting to) it releases endorphins, which is the hormone that makes you feel good.

There are 4 things that also release this hormone

  • Laughter (Get out funny movies / standup)
  • Exercise (Go for a walk / run)
  • Sex (If available :-)
  • Curry (I don’t even know why, but hey!)

One thing I have always done is focus on the tasks that I need to complete to get to a situation where I will be happy.

If you also understand that there are always options, and thinking about what they might be, this naturally makes you more optimistic.

A staff member of mine suffered from depression, and I coached him through this, and I used a technique which is everytime you feel down, flick a rubber band around your wrist, and then re-state the sentence in a positive manner:
Eg “My life sucks”(or whatever it is that was troubling you) and then re-phrase it to “My life only sucks at the moment, because i have a crap job”

A lot of these things seem cheesy at first, but are just as a method to develop good habits. Can you let me know how you get on? And also if you thought that this was of assistance?

HEY

HEYHAHAHA YEAA ACTUALLY I ALWAYS SMILE .. LOL .. I WAS FORCED TO SMILE ALL THE TIME AS A CHILDNOW EVEN WHEN IM PISSEDI SMILE .. LOL .. BUT THANKSYEAA i just don’t have that many postive motivation in my life .. everyone i know is depressed .. hahaha “college life ” soo it almost seems okay to feel this way .. but umm .. i guess i don’t like it .. i want to be happy … yeaa . im gonna attempt to get over this “life long phase” i been .. aha … thanks though … :-)

OK, I tell you what.

I will be prepared to spend time daily / weekly coaching you, and discussing your progress with you, and being like a 1-person-cheering-team for you. I will add a goal of my own which is “to help someone beat their depression”.

BUT I am extremely picky about goals that I set (and I like to damn well meet them!), and I am only prepared to commit to this if you can convince me that you are commited to this yourself. Why do you want to be happy? What will it do to you if you don’t?

Are you interested?

I was impressed at the fact that you would be willing to help someone on this website with their depression. I hope you don’t mind me asking how you are to assist confused101. Would it be on 43things or on the phone? Is this the only person you’d be willing to help?

At the end of the day

For anyone trying to change anything about themselves like english_wolf says: “You can do it, but only if you really want it”

I had intended to help by using email, this website, calling cards so yes, phone calls (I am in NZ), as well as chat programs.

I am assuming confused101 was not so keen, but the offer does stand that if anyone is serious about wanting to be happy, I am serious about helping coach them through that. :-)

I have personally gone through a lot and I had to leave home at 15. I made my mind up then, that I wanted to have a fun and happy life, and at 29 so far I have certainly succeeded in doing that.

I had sort of thought we could set goals each week, little things, and then build up to it.

You can do it, but only if you really want it

This is a difficult one to talk about because everyone is different, and i’m not sure you technically ever beat depression, I personally believe it’s like alcohol addiction, you’re permanently recovering.
If you truly don’t know what’s causing the depression, just as I never did, then i know how much pain you go through and I sympathise, but it’s time for you to do something about it. It doesn’t matter what people say to you to help or what good intentions you have, unless you start to combat it yourself you’ll never see any improvements. Sorry if that sounds harsh as I know motivation is not easy to come by but it’s true what I say, the only motivation that will get you trying to improve your life comes from within.
I find the best way to silence the negative thoughts in my head is to keep myself busy all the time, no matter how tired I am. I’ve had to force myself many times to go out and do something instead of doing nothing but lying there thinking, and eventually falling asleep in the middle of the day, and making myself worse.
I am just a couple of years older then you and have suffered from depression constantly from the age of 7 until very recently. I had to force myself to do things but not to enjoy them. To enjoy things I had to let go of my feelings and that was hard, in fact I still have trouble doing this as it’s a major defence mechanism.
You can do this, you need to believe in yourself and set yourself lots of little achievable goals all the time. Try to look for the good in everything you do instead of the bad e.g. I only finished 3rd in a sporting event, changes to, I managed to beat 72 people who have trained as hard as me and wanted victory as much as me.
Sorry if you can’t relate to that example, I have a sporting background and find it easy to relate things to sport.
Anyway, I could waffle on for hours on this subject and still have loads more to say, So if you’d like me to talk more contact me and i’ll see how much help I can be.
Take care, and good luck :-)

Every day

I’ve found it helps me to do a couple of things. One is to really think about things I can do that make me happy…or happier. For me that is going to the beach, making art, shopping (dangerously expensive), doing something that takes energy (riding my bike, going to a club) or doing something nice for someone else.

The other thing I’ve started is a journal where I write down positive stuff about myself. Compliments I’ve gotten, a goal I reached, something I’ve accomplished…then when I start feeling really crappy I can read it…and remember that I have good points and that life isn’t always bleak.
