It has to be by land, of course. This has been my dream trip for many years.

For a really interesting perspective on such a trip, there’s a young man in Sonoma County, California, who rode his bicycle from the top of Alaska to Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, when he was 18 years old. His website has lots of wonderful photos and a tale of great adventure.

A great adventure indeed. Too bad all the photos are not yet posted. I will be interested in reading about how he crossed the Darien Gap—a space at the Panama-Colombia frontier where the Pan-American Highway hasn’t been completed, mainly because it would devastate the rich rainforest environment of that area. (May it remain incomplete!)
The Darien Gap isn’t just incomplete because of the rain forest. It’s also probably the most dangerous place in the world, due to its control by Colombian rebel groups. People are routinely disappeared and murdered in the Gap.
Our friend, Emmanuel, rode to Panama City, then flew to Cartagena, which is north of Panama City.
I really think u should do it Ruth. It´s worth the miles traveled and the money spent. Ok, I know, it´s not very objective for me to say it, since I live in Argentina and had the pleasure to visit Ushuaia several times, but because it´s a place every human being on this earth should pay a visit. Best of lucks.
