Take care of myself: Get the heck out of this toxic environment
Eye on the prize.

I don’t think there’s a person here who has read my entries about my home environment who would say it isn’t toxic to (at the very least) my mental well being if not my physical health.

While they aren’t doing anything physically to be detrimental to me-I have clean water, food, and a roof over my head- they are dangerous for my mental well-being, which in turn affects me physically as well. They mock me and my illness, they put down my efforts and are completely unsupportive. (I won’t elaborate, as I’m sure I’ve painted a pretty good picture through other entries.)

If you’ve ever thought “GET THE HELL OUT E!!!”, you better believe I have. Just about every single day.

I know I have to get more well first, and get a job but my eye is on the prize: finally getting out.

Well, don’t give up or just accept your situation. Change is hard, but worth it.

I’m working on it as best I can :)

Is there some kind of support

in your community?

Is there some kind of low income housing you could apply for?

Talk to a community support worker, or someone like that. Talk to a therapist about assistance.

What if your health doesn’t improve enough to move out? There must be a way.

Do you have other relatives, or friends you could live with?

The longer you stay, likely the longer your health will suffer. I can’t see you getting better in a toxic environment.

Don’t wait to heal, and get a job. There must be assistance for someone chronically ill. Disability assistance? Something. Keep asking community sources for help.

In short: no

There is no one else that I can live with; most of my family falls into one of the following categories: intentional ignorance, disbelief/feels POTS is made up, believes POTS exists but doesn’t understand why I have so many “issues” (doesn’t understand how it affects me or why it’s impact is as big as it is), etc.

When I talked to my specialist, she said that I could apply for disability but that I would probably have several rounds of trials to go through because POTS isn’t considered a disability. (It’s possible to get it, but it can take years and a very long legal battle with several appeals. Never on the first try.)

Also, because disability is based on your last prior income, and I was working minimum wage part-time (I was in college) the benefits I might receive probably wouldn’t even pay for my medications, let alone be anything livable. I don’t see a therapist, though I probably should, purely because I can’t afford one.

I’m working on it. I’m going to Cleveland in May for further treatment options. I also send out 15-20 resumes every week, but our job market is poor and I’ve only had three interviews in the last two months. I won’t lie, it’s a struggle.

Thank you for your suggestions though! I’ll see if I can find some sort of social worker maybe who can help.

just a thought

If you’re not still claimed as a dependent, I think you’d be eligible for income-based housing/section 8/etc. I know some waiting lists can be miles long, but if you qualify it couldn’t hurt to apply now… and if you’re still in need of housing when your name comes up on the list, then you’ve got an option. IF it’s something you’re interested in pursuing I’d be happy to talk with you about it more… just PM me :)
