book i have just started reading is called America Unchained by David Goreman.
about a brittish comedian who decides to explore the US but by refusing to give money to “the man” i.e all the brands and chains, and corporations etc… therefore no best western hotels, holiday inns, etc… no BP gas stations, no kfc’s or starbucks. anything like that. once in the US he buys an old car to drive and begin his roadtrip. he has to explore the US solely with out those things/brands… and see if he can survive and only support the “mom and pop” stores etc… so this leads him more down to the american south.
he has a camera woman with him who is filming the whole 4 month trip as the bbc have asked him to make a no holds barred documentary of it.
the doc has already been made a while ago… but its not on telly any more, i cant find it. will keep looking tho.
anyway so this book is all about his road trip and exploring unchained america, staying in small motels, visiting the small mom and pop convenience stores, getting to know the locals, driving with no predetermined destination, bit of danger bit of adventure, and getting to know the america thats not always seen. the non flashy, non corporate, non celeby, holly wood america. and how life is for them. and also seeing if he likes and can survive not relying on and giving money to/supporting “the man”.
i have just started it and all good so far.
