find the perfect pair of jeans (read all 4 entries…)
Singing the blues

Jeans – an obvious staple, and one I don’t currently have in any satisfactory capacity, much less approaching “perfect”. I’m actually hoping to embark on a staple replacement quest, since I’ve fallen into a mommy clothing rut and really want to pull myself out. I thought a great pair of jeans would be the ideal place to start.

5 years ago I had this goal and made do with a pair a friend bought for me – I liked them and wore them to death. This time I want to go out and really nail it. I’m within a few pounds of my goal weight (this was another carrot for me) so I want to start looking now.

I’m thinking basic but not boring, dark wash, dress up or down, boot cut? I went out and tried several pairs on yesterday, but nothing struck me as buy, wear, and love worthy. Maybe I’ll actually talk to one of the helpful jeans poohbahs. That’s their job, yes? I’m not aiming to serve muffins or descend into that (still unknown, fortunately) land of “mom jeans” – I want to feel good in what I wear again. Is there a patron saint of denim?

"Is there a patron saint of denim ?"

I guess Saint John (> in French, he’s called Saint Jean) !

It’s tough to find a good pair of jeans, boot cut is a nice option indeed, goes with everything. But skinny and even large jeans can look flattering as well depending on what you’re wearing as a top ; the only cut I’m prejudiced against is the really straight one, a bit shapeless IMHO, it’s like walking around in cardboard clothes. I love bell-bottomed pants too although they’re hard to find these days since obviously out of fashion.

Personal don’ts :

- too high-waisted (hello, Steve Urkel)

- too low-waisted (jeans aren’t just for your legs !)

- excessively bleached with holes in unrealistic places (I understand the point is to make it look like they’ve been worn but they really just look like brand new jeans that someone happened to splatter with paint and cover with holes). They have a whole selection of those at Gap which they actually advertise as ruined or destroyed or something. As a matter of fact they’re often the most expensive.

- Too blue. I don’t know if that’s what you mean by “mom jeans” but any color you see in an episode of Seinfeld is probably a don’t. Sometimes I see pure solid blue jeans that look really good but it’s hard to find that right shade. I like when it’s almost greenish.

Those are just very loose guidelines of mine of course, every clothing item is unique so you never know what you’ll eventually go for ! Good luck on your search :)

Saint John gets an orange

Wonderful, helpful response, thanks! I thoroughly agree with your dont’s, at least for myself personally. I’m also not fond of distressed jeans – Isak was recently trying to understand why a store was selling “new old pants”, and ones that looked like “someone peed in them”, which cracked me up. (I had a pair of black jeans that I thoroughly killed back in my 1980’s blue hair / big boots days, but over a long time and I would never have bought them that way.)

Skinny/large jeans don’t work particularly well on me, being curvy (and currently even more top heavy than usual), although they’re nice on some… another no for me are the heavily priced super blingy jeans that look like someone went apeshit with a bedazzler, but again, not something I want, no criticism for those who crave a shiny hiney. And re. mom jeans, I meant those high waisted shapeless things (though I gather “pajama jeans” are the new mom jeans). Not my thing.

M. would like me to add that he really disliked the jean style diapers for babies that looked like tiny daisy dukes. (“I poo in blue!”) on that note, I’m pretty happy with my choice and to be checking this off so soon. :)

I nominate

Saint Baudilus, since he’s a patron saint of Nîmes. Yes that makes him the patron saint denim ;)

Well, I saw you found a pair by now. I thought I’d write a line here anyway, because I had just been looking for jeans myself up and down the city for some time.

I think that when I wear a pair I really like, which I think fits really nicely, I carry myself differently :)

I hope you enjoy your new pair !
