A bass player: seriously good-looking – top priority!! (ok, ok I’ll take this seriously) Tone like warm chocolate fudge, grooves that make you melt, able to play anything and intelligent and music-savvy enough to add something to my tunes.
Drummer: actually I know the guy I want…someone like him (if not him), sensitive, responsive, dynamic, with a plethora of grooves, creative and funky as all get out.
It should go without saying, but if I don’t say it the universe may overlook it (I don’t know how this works exactly), they need to have their own gear and transport!
Now here’s the part where I start wishing, because I actually already know guys that fill the criteria above, but I want people that WANT to play with me, that are willing to jam regularly, that want to contribute to the band and the songs and are excited about the possibilities… and I’d like to meet them fairly soon, thank you.
Ok, so…is that it? Sit back and wait? or do I have to make a sacrifice at the new moon or something?

I feel...
Like I’m kind of in the same boat you are. I’m a bass player, songwriter, dabble in a few other things. But I tend to get snubbed a fair amount because I’m “old” for a musician, so all the 20-something college kids around here don’t really care to have me hanging out ruining their carefully cultivated image. And most of the folks who are my age have already decided that they’re not going to go anywhere serious with their music, so they are just playing cover tunes in “tribute” bands or weekend bar bands. It’s frustrating. I’m about at the point of making the sacrifice at the new moon myself.
Hang in there, though, and I wish you the best of luck. One possible idea for you is to use this whole interweb thingy to at least get some of your music finished and maybe network with some other folks. I’d be happy to give your stuff a listen and see if I can lay down some intelligent grooves that make you melt like warm chocolate fudge…
Aww shoot, Joe!
You’re a gem! Biggest smile I’ve had all day.
Your comment got me thinking (and it wasn’t a happy revelation) that finding band members is like finding a boyfriend. I say not happy, because I stink at that! SOMEWHERE out there is my perfect band – I hope the bass player isn’t as far away as Texas! Thanks for the offer – I actually haven’t had the guts to play my stuff to ANYONE yet…maybe I’ll send you something… Will you swap? ;p

I understand...
the not having the guts to play your stuff to anyone. I’m pretty self-conscious about my voice, as well as about the lyrics that I write, so I’m still trying to get comfortable with actually singing my own words and putting them out there into the world. But of course if you send me some of your music to listen to, I’ll be happy to do the same. In any case, I currently have accounts on SoundClick.com (joemayer), SoundCloud.com (josephmayer), and ReverbNation.com (joemayer), and I hope to be posting stuff to all of those soon. So, you can listen to someone else floundering around musically if you want. :-)
