shoo, flu!

I got a flu shot last week. Have you gotten one this winter and/or do you usually get one?

And did you know that the northern and southern hemispheres use different flu vaccines (because their winters are at different times)?

Collectorofcats can hardly wait for the asparagus to pop up so it will be truly Spring

I got my flu shot in October.

gottawonder Loves her tortoise!

I'm not comfortable getting it.

I’ve heard of a few people now who had some really bad reactions to the shot, and many who got fairly ill afterwards.

I also have heard from several people who got the flu shot, who still ended up getting the flu. This is because the flu keeps changing all the time, so the strain that you were innoculated for may not be quite the same flu going around in a few months.

So, if it doesn’t really help, why make the pharmaceutical company richer, and help to feed the fear machine?

The flu shot won't necesarilly keep you from getting the flu

But perhaps you’ll suffer less thru the symptoms. There are pros and cons on getting the shot. There are several different strains of flu going around each year and it is a calculated guess at which one will become most prevalent and that’s the one that the vaccine is made for. The hope is that you’ll get your exposure to that strain instead of the others and not get the flu. I always get a shot because my husband has had chemo and his immune system isn’t as strong as it once was. I work among people who may not follow healthy personal higiene habits and may even be exposed to others who could be ill. I also get the shot because my employer offers it free,

I Did

I’ve gotten one for the past four years or so. Interesting factoid about the timing of flu shots. Make sense!

bermudamohawk it's time for change.

not I

I’ve never had a flu shot.

I get a flu shot every year!

did you know that the strains from this year are the same as last year (for the Northern Hemisphere)?

I did not know that. I wonder how often the strains get reused.

Nope

I got the flu shot once in high school and ended up getting the flu. I’m not sure if it was better or worse than if I wouldn’t have gotten the shot but sick is sick to me so I decided not to bother in the future.
I didn’t actually know that, that’s really interesting, thanks!

Got one this year

I’ve never gotten one before though. This year it was a “needleless” shot.

I only got one this year because for the past two years every single sickness I got seemed to be the most extreme. I had an ear infection that took a trip to the ER, IV meds, two rounds of steroids, antibiotics to clear up, walking pneumonia, bronchitis for 6 weeks, poison ivy that took two rounds of meds to clear up.

Plus, my work actually brings a company in to do them and they pay for them too so I figured it was worth it.

I felt run down for a day after the shot but then I was ok.

I had no idea there were different types for the different hemispheres. Interesting!

Nope

Never had a flu shot.

I get one every year

Before I started getting the shot I got the flu 3 times. Each time was worst than the previous. People don’t understand that the flu is a serious illness, not a bad cold. It can kill you. I haven’t had the flu in about 25 years and I hope I never get it again. This week a sinus infection kicked my ass; I can’t imagine what the flu would have done to me! Oh, and I’ve never had a so-called reaction to the shot. The shots use a killed virus. It provokes an immune reaction in the body but is incapable of producing the flu. People who catch a cold (a completely unrelated thing) after getting the shot sometimes think they’ve gotten the flu from the shot. Or they may have gotten really unlucky and caught the flu before their body could produce the anti-bodies; it takes about 2 weeks.

Yes

If I get the flu, I expose it to my partner. If she gets the flu, with all her immune issues she is at very high risk for dying from it.

So yes. Every year. Diligently.

Once

when the ‘swine flu’ was going around. It was a big mistake as i ended up getting very sick the following week. Whether or not the shot provoked it im not entirely sure, a few others had the same reaction.

I went to the only free clinic at the time and was refused treatment and told to go back home.

Come to think of it it was a testing time for me. I was living by myself and I was so sick I was bedridden. It’s terribly hard enough when you’re in that state but its even harder when you have noone else to care for you.

I managed to nurse myself back to health through God’s grace and SOW ( soup, oranges, water ).

I never had a flu shot again, I think God’s already given me what i need.

.

I never had one. They only give them to the elderly & people with compromised immune systems here.

Simon isn't ungoogleable.

I've never had one.

Unless my current situation changes in unexpected ways, I doubt I ever will. I’ve only had one dose of flu in my life, it didn’t kill me, chances are I’ll be fine if and when it attacks me again.

I can hear pharmacists, immuno-experts and infectious-disease specialists spluttering into their respective libations.

Nope

never have. Isn’t likely I ever will.
