Conquer my fear of driving (read all 2 entries…)

I used to be a fairly confident driver, but since being in an accident on the highway just before Christmas, I can barely stand being a passenger in a car, let alone driving one.

I know it’s normal to feel this way after an accident but it’s getting worse as time goes on, not better. I tried to drive a few days ago and was shaking so bad that I had to go back home. Just thinking about driving on the highway makes me feel sick.

I think I’d feel better if someone was in the car with me, but since I’m far away from my family and my friends are too busy, I can’t find anyone to help me with it. So I’m going to try driving around a parking lot tomorrow and at least once a day until I can get back on the road again.

Comments:

While I wish you luck with desensitising yourself to cars, driving and traffic, I was wondering if you’d considered trauma counseling? It’s possible that insurance from the accident would cover treatment for PTSD.

Thanks

I went to see the school counselors a couple of times but they didn’t really know how to help. The insurance won’t cover counseling either. So I’m just trying to deal with it on my own for now.

Are you away at college? If so, there may be counseling included in your school benefits… and, maybe you could be a passenger while your friends are running errands, like going grocery shopping and such. This might help you feel better about even getting in the car. Many blessings as you find your way back into the driver’s seat.

Yep, I’m at college, but the counselors were sort of at a loss as to how to help me with this, lol. I got a friend to come with me to drive on the highway last week and was nervous but did okay – I’ve always been better with someone else in the car though, so I’m not sure how I’ll do alone. Thanks for the ideas!
