who was also one of my mom’s favorite students. He had expressed an interest in visiting my mom, because she was a positive influence in his life, but he wasn’t doing it out of respect for me. I told him about how I’d been in contact with my mom & brother & told him my mom had asked about him & would most likely be thrilled to see him.
He wrote right back & asked for her phone number so he could make arrangements for a visit. I didn’t have her number, so I e-mailed my brother. I caught him at his desk, and he wrote right back with her number and a little commentary about his life.
Now my friend has arranged to visit with my mom next week. I think it will be a good time for both of them.
This may seem like a small thing, but it is hugely gratifying to me to be able to have these exchanges. I know that seeing my friend will make my mom happy. It will make him happy too, and it feels good to have helped orchestrate the meeting. Especially, it feels great to be able to have these simple e-mail exchanges with my brother. I have felt orphaned for so long, and I am starting to feel more of a sense of having a family.
