Rosetta stone

Has anyone tried Rosetta Stone in Arabic? Does it work … in Arabic or any other language. Any other effective method anyone knows of … other than moving to the Middle East :-)

Comments:

Try Michel Thomas

The method is very good in terms of constructing sentences with ease. I don’t know how Rosetta Stone compares but MT was available in my local library. It’s Egyptian Arabic though but i’m going with it anyway.

Never heard of MT

Thanks, I’ll look it up.
I did the Rosetta Stone trail online. They try to teach you Pashtun (I bet the CIA monitor the site to see who does well on it :-) ). They use a lot of pics to try to teach you vocabulary and sentences. It reminded me of using flashcards to teach kids words. But it is one short session. I bet it works, but I am not sure if I want to spend the money.
I’ll see if my local library has MT and I’ll give it a shot.

oh btw

(sorry) have you tried ‘live mocha’ online? They use pics too – I think they ‘nicked’ the Rosetta Stone approach. Not sure if it’s as ‘thorough’ though as i’ve never used RS.

Also online

is busuu.com. I’ve never done any of the Arabic stuff but I’ve greatly expanded my French and Spanish vocabulary on there. The set up is visual and audio which I think helps (similar to the flashcard thing again). You can also pay for a premium account…although I can’t personally speak on the difference. Plus there is plenty of opportunity to practice, writing posts that native speakers will correct or trying to live chat with someone once you can sting some sentences together.

Bigmighty has gotten 7 cheers on this entry.
