Publish some fiction
Childhood expectations

I always thought I’d be a writer-of fiction. I am a writer, I’ve published a lot of children’s book reviews, articles on children’s literature and authors and related topics, and I have also published some non-fiction articles for children in the magazine I work for. But I’ve never published any fiction- although ironically I teach a class in writing for children in an MA in creative writing program—and I don’t suppose I’ll ever completely feel like a writer until I do.

On the other hand, I get a lot of satisfaction out of the work I do do, and the from the things I do publish, so perhaps being a fiction writer isn’t on the cards for me. Maybe I’m a better editor of fiction than I’ll ever be a writer. But I still want to do it.

Comments:

Don’t follow the philosophy of ‘Those who can do, those who can’t teach’. Get out there and give it a go!
Surely you have some unpublished fiction writing? Find a source of getting it published!
Now for me to follow my own advice. I, too, am a teacher. I, too, teach about literature and writing. I, too, have non-fiction articles published but not yet fiction. I am working towards it though.
