I checked my email last night and I had 12 in my inbox. I cleared them, all advertising, no personal communication that needed to be responded to. I checked my email this morning and I had 14 in my inbox. More of the same. That’s 26 emails that were purely advertising or urging me to buy, buy, buy. Telling me I ‘had to have…’

I have no doubt that when I check it again tonight there will be just as many of the same again.

I was reminded of that Greek myth about Sisyphus, the guy who went to Hades and was condemned to roll the boulder uphill, only to have it roll all the way back down and have to start all over again.

I was thinking that if he had been able to make the boulder smaller, if he had chipped away at it until it was just a pebble, he could have picked it up, put it in his pocket and finally made it out of there.

Sometimes our email overload can rob us of a meaningful life. Can you imagine what you would do if you had 26 letters arrive in your mailbox at the front gate everyday? You would probably bin most of them without even looking at them but then there is the risk you could overlook something important.

I began taking control of my email at the beginning of the year. Now it is creeping up again.

It’s time to hit the ‘unsubscribe’ button again.
