Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

post random questions daily and see if anyone plays with me and answers them :) (read all 454 entries…)

I was shown this Austrailian KFC commercial on youtube yesterday and was told it got pulled off the American market for being racist. What do you think?
Do you have any interesting youtube videos you would like to share?

Simon - isn't ungoogleable.

Racist, how?

Can someone, anyone, explain to me how that was racist? And anti which race? I don’t get it.

Dead7and_Dreaming hoped the robots would come to their senses in vain

The white guy is feeling awkward amongst a crowd of black people, and manages to make it less awkward with fried chicken. Assorting blacks with fried chicken is a stereotype that draws racist accusations, especially from Americans and Canadians. The fact that the commercial making him seem afraid of being around so many black people seems to be pretty racist, although it is not the worst commercial there has been on T.V

BeautifulDay I wasn't older yet, I wasn't wise I guess

I think it’s culturally irrelevant in America. They’d be like cricket, what?

Also, as you said fried chicken is a racist stereotype in America and Canada, possibly not in Australia? I don’t live in Australia but since someone that is not American (Simon) doesn’t get the racism, I think that is very possible.

cluricaune does NOT want to be facebooked, twittered or shared.

I'm not American either...

...I’ve never even set foot in America.

But, I do know about the stereotype.

BeautifulDay I wasn't older yet, I wasn't wise I guess

Hmm ok

I still don’t think that it was their intent to draw on that stereotype, but perhaps I’m wrong.

Simon - isn't ungoogleable.

I'm aware of the stereotype.

What I don’t understand is why it came to be that way, and why it remains. It’s almost like people want to see racism/sexism/whateverism when it doesn’t exist. Why can’t the ad be about a bunch of sports fans eating chicken and having a good time?

BeautifulDay I wasn't older yet, I wasn't wise I guess

Sorry for assuming.

barbar_ella get in touch with your feelings, babe

he didn’t seem scared to me. just a bit uncomfortable. and actually it looked like he didn’t care for all the noise, not the people.

if they aired an american version they definitely would get a lot of complaints.

Simon - isn't ungoogleable.

How about an alternative interpretation?

A person is being distracted from watching a sporting event they paid a small fortune to see, so in order to calm the folks who’re making all the noise, a snack is purchased from the nearest fast food joint, thus giving them something else to do with their mouths and hands.

It’s perfectly possible to view it without regard to race or color or even team affiliation.

And don’t whites eat fried chicken too?

Seems to me that there’s a small number of people just looking for trouble, searching out anything they can shout “Racist!” or “Sexist!” or “Homophobic!” over.

I’m slightly lost. I guess it depends on how you perceive what the guy’s ‘awkard’ situation is. For me it’d be being stuck in any crowd, so I get the awkward situation. (But then I’d not have placed myself in a crowd to begin with.)

At a slight tangent but still controversial I do have a humorous vegetarian youtube video I’d love to share.
is this video vegetarianist?

ha ha.
What a meanie that guy is.
Did you notice his grumpy smile?
very funny

I don't get the impression

that it was intended to be racist, but the fact that it’s one white guy in a sea of black people, and he feels a little awkward so he hands around a bucket of chicken….it ends up having racist overtones even if it was supposed to come across differently.

In the states and Canada they would be crucified for an ad like that.

Gho-s-t Noone lights a candle under the table , make your powers be known.

I found it hilarious for those very reasons, and theres nothing wrong with that.

Man you people in the states have gotten so sensitive.

Collectorofcats No matter where I go in the future I'll remember 43 things.

I don't think it was racist from an Austrailian point of view

Only in an American market.

Collectorofcats has gotten 4 cheers on this entry.
