joie de vivre here only intermittantly
My parents had read a memoir that my friend’s uncle had written. Somehow it was sent to Berlin, before he was sent to Theresienstadt, and from there to Treblinka.
We talked about the memoir, and how my friend’s mother’s family had managed to leave Germany in 1938, after Kristallnacht.
My father said that my grandfather said that you really know it is time to leave when the legislature has been taken over, and the courts are no longer independent.
What if the taking over is more subtle than the Reichstag being set on fire. What then?
