Family Night

It was family night at the nursing home tonight so I went and joined Grandma for dinner. We sat beside some friends of hers that we got to chat with before dinner. I went and picked up our dinner for us. Grandma had grilled chicken with macaroni salad, baked beans and fruit salad. I went with a hamburger instead of the chicken, and butterscotch brownie instead of the fruit salad. Later an Elvis impersonator came by singing and put a scarf around Grandma’s neck. He did that with most of the residents. He later came back and handed her a Ty Beanie Baby Teddy Bear while singing “(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear”. Grandma can’t really hear in crowds so she didn’t realize what was going on. She later gave the teddy bear to her sister Alice’s former roommate, Grace. (Alice was a resident of the nursing home too until she died last year.) Grandma made a comment about Elvis having loose hips.

After taking Grandma back to her room, she thanked me for coming. I told her I had a good time. I was the only family member who came for family night.

The fact that you were the only family member

to show up for family night makes me sad.

Me Too

My parents were out of town and didn’t get back until tonight, or I bet at least my mom would be there.

When we were discussing it a couple weeks ago, I asked Grandma if she wanted to tell Uncle Kit. Her response was that he wouldn’t come. He’s her son so why wouldn’t he want to come? He does visit her twice a week. Her other grandson hasn’t visited her once.

I’m there four days a week. I’m out of town the other three days. Mom visits Grandma five or six days a week, and calls her a few times each day.

I guess I was thinking that no one else's

family showed up . . . that you were the “only” family member period. Did I get that wrong? I kinda hope I misunderstood you!

Kind Of

At the table I was at, there were 9 residents, and three family members counting me. The other two family members were for one resident, so only 2 out of 9 residents had family members there at my table.

That sounds like

a fun and sweet night…!

How often

do they throw Family Night?

Frequency

I believe just once a year. With the small turn out of family members it probably isn’t feasible to do it even that often.
