Maybe part of my 43t blues has been that it seemed I was in a vacuum. Ringo & I were exchanging notes, but it seemed like everyone else dropped off the face of the earth, almost.
Anyway, did you take the bookstore job? Did I totally discourage you? You know, that really wasn’t my intent, but I DID want you to “get” what the job was really like, so you weren’t disillusioned.
You can ask Ringo (RingotheScorpio) he used to work at the Borders nearby what working for a chain is like. As I said, I’ve never done that.
So, are you maybe coming to Readercon? If Ringo can swing it, I’m sure he’ll tag along (he works as a stagehand and there’s a lot more work in the spring/summer than there is now), and I know lots of booksellers to introduce you to, and perhaps some others too.
I dearly love Readercon. I find it as close to “home” as any place I’ve ever been.

Reader Con, and Books
Yep, I’ll be happy to talk about my book store time with anyone. Just drop an e-mail. I like some aspects of working for the big chain store, ESPECIALLY my own role at the store. HOWEVER, there were aspects I didn’t like, and eventually lead to my need to leave for my own mental health and sanity.
I have every intention of attending Reader Con. It was the highlight of my summer last year, and can’t imagine missing it this year. ESPECIALLY because I have missed the other cons because of work.

sorry for putting off my reply to this for so long!!!! was just waiting till i had more time for a collected response….
would love to chat with you more about Readercon… it does sound v. Cool. There is a chance I’ll be in California at that time, but if I’m on the East Coast I would most definitely love to go!

also, you did not put me off the bookstore option… I really do appreciate the time you took to write such a thoughtful response, and your answer Was indeed helpful! I decided not to take that job because I am moving to NYC, so it didn’t make sense, but who knows, may take another such job in the city… however, I do need to earn more than 7something an hour, so…

unless I can supplement it with something better paying, it’ll be hard to sustain myself financially with that job…

Well, I decided I was going for a walk and had wanted to join this, so I just adopted the goal instead of waiting for an invite. Now I know for the future how the team works.
