The people I know who are wonderful parents research parenting like crazy! A lot of my friends love the ‘What to Expect…” series, which is probably a good place to start.

Hi LM,
This site needs improvements, like the system of alerts, I mean, I didn’t even know that your comment was here until just now. Not to gripe, I say it only as an apology/explaination for why I haven’t acknowledged it yet.
Anyways, YES!, great suggestion! My wife already has a stack of pregnancy-related books by the bedside but I wanna get some about what we’ll need to know after the little baby is born, like diapering (we wanna do cloth), learning, life stages, etc.
I wonder, do you have kids? It occurs to me that I don’t know your gender yet but, now that I think about it, why should that matter?
P.S. When do you think you’ll find out about your school situation?

I’ve been in the same boat before.
I haven’t got kids, myself, but I’m a pretty involved auntie and have close friends who are parenting geeks—the cloth-diaper, co-sleeper, baby-signing type of parenting geeks.
Now that I’m thinking about it more, it seems pretty important to build a support network— drawing on family and seeking out other parents with similar values.
p.s. I’m not sure about the school stuff—I think it’ll be at least a couple of weeks even if all the paper work I faxed in made it through OK.
