Josh ...and life just rolls on like a river.

hike the appalachian trail (read all 3 entries…)
For various...

...reason (some personal and some financial), this never happened. The original goal was to thru-hike the trail (hike all 2200 miles in one long trip). Then it kind of changed to breaking the hike up into two 10 week sessions in the same year. Eventually, I moved on because the timing for this goal wasn’t right yet. I’ve decided that I want to do this again, but I’m taking a different approach. I’m going to section hike it this time. The plan is to spend 10 day sessions on the trail doing about 150 miles each time I do a section. I plan to do 2-3 of these sections a year. The trail “should” take about 5 years to complete in sections like these (though, honestly, it’ll take however long it takes… even if it takes 10 years or more, it’s still an incredible feat to hike something like this). I imagine that I will do most of these sections by myself, though I may have some friends do some of the sections with me. I hope to do my first section either in May or June of this year, depending on how my work schedule goes. I’m not giving up the idea of thru-hiking the trail someday… I still think that would be an amazing experience, but this is more doable for me at the moment based on the priorities that I choose to have at the moment.

It's really difficult

for most people to be able to commit to the huge chunk of time to do a trail like this as a thru-hike. It’s true that doing the thru-hike would be a different experience because of the long-term immersion, but you still get to see all of it by doing it in sections!

I’ve been working on the Colorado Trail for almost 30 years now, and it’s less than 500 miles long ;)

Have fun and take pics!

Josh has gotten 11 cheers on this entry.
