attend my 20 year West High School reunion in Anchorage, Alaska
Billy Idol Rules 3 years ago

Okay – I finally figured out how to post a photo on this site, thanks Dan for setting it up and Teresa for arranging the reunion.

I am in San Anselmo, CA (about 20 miles north of San Francisco) with my husband Micha, son Riley (almost 3) and son Max (4 months).

Not to copy Kent or anything but I will also list my favorite activities right now rather than catch up on the last 20 years: trail running, dancing with my kids to a Wiggles video, dining out with my husband, seeing old friends (Diana Olson, Mike Rood, Domindador Gobaleza, Bekki Buenviaje, Michelle Holler, Debbie Bellange) at our “mini-reunions” in places like Italy and Hawaii, and reading People Magazine.

Yes, I have pretty much given up reading novels and non-fiction and have replaced it with drivel on celebrities. Sleep deprivation will do that to you and hopefully by August, Maxy will be sleeping through the night and I’ll be able to actually string a coherent sentence together. See you all then!

Peace

Comments:

Charol,
My wife grew up in San Anselmo (beautiful area). Did you survive the flooding this year? Great photos of the kids.
Hal

Hi Hal!

I was inspired by your reference to ‘80s music and it’s great to hear from
you.

I love San Anselmo, we moved there in 2001 despite the sky-high real estate
prices and honestly, I’d be happy to retire here. We are right behind the
high school (Sir Francis Drake) and are walking distance from both SA and
Fairfax.

We were in Hawaii when the floods hit and it was surreal to see it on CNN.
Lots of damage including our favorite Japanese restaurant (still not up and
running) and diner (Bubba’s – opened 3 weeks ago).

You and your family look very happy in Minneapolis, do you ever get out to
San Anselmo sometimes?

Dancin' with Myself

Glad you were above water ,and better yet, on the beach. My wife remembers the last flood back in the mid-80’s so be prepared for another one in about 20 years. Her Dad is in Ignacio so we occasionally make it to NoCal.

Tell Dom, Lady Di, & Mrs. Holler to get on this site.

Hal

Rebel YEll

Definitely give me a shout when you are in the area.

Quick recap on the 4 others:
Dominador – living in NC – he is a psychiatrist in the military, is about to be deployed soon

Diana – living in Seattle – visits the Bay area & Anchorage frequently, is an expert at forestry and particularly at how fires affect trees

Michelle – living in Wasilla – just had twin girls a month ago (also has a 4 year old boy), is a high school math teacher

Mike – living in San Diego – is a high school principal, loves to park his boat on the front lawn to annoy the neighbors

Hi Charol

Mike Rood! I couldn’t remember his last name. Do you know if he’ll be there?

Hi John!

You and your family look great.

I just saw Mike in Kauai when we hung out together for a week. He’s in San Diego and is a high school principal (can you believe it?).

He won’t be there, he is taking a trip to the Caribbean with his family that exact week. His email is:

mrood@sandi.net

I knew it was Charol...

I appologize for sprlling your nzme wrong. We went to Oahu in ‘04 and would love to live in Hawaii someday, the weather is always perfect!

Charol:
Fantastic to hear about you and family! We are big Hawaii fans (we lived there 1995-1998 while I was a lawyer) and try to go back every year. Let us know the next time you will be there and we can meet for a Maitai. Also, Wiggles are Aussies, mate. Good to see the exports kicking butt in your neck of the world.
Peace

K

Charol - when did you ditch NYC?

Sorry – I couldn’t respond directly to Charol’s so will piggyback off Kent’s comment . . . .

Condom Nation

Katie, your kids are so adorable!

I think I know what street you live on too, we used to walk by there – walk BY there mind you – to go to this ice cream shop in the Village that had a dog theme.

I met my husband in NYC and we moved out here/got married in 1999. I do miss NYC, especially during the holidays. We’re there once a year to catch up with friends and make the pilgrimage to Peter Luger’s.

Can’t wait to see you in August, are you bringing the family?

Lazy Sunday

Your kids are also very cute – looks like we’ve been going through our childbearing at roughly the same times. You may miss NYC but I’m sure the gorgeous vistas out there make up for it. (And I’m going to go out on a limb and bet that you don’t have your baby sleeping in your bedroom because you live in a tiny 2 br apt!!) I’m not sure where the doggy ice cream store is, but I live 3 too-short blocks from Magnolia Bakery, most recently highlighted in a pretty funny “Lazy Sunday” Sat night live video clip that was running through the web lately. If you left in ‘99, that means we must have met up in NYC almost 10 years ago?? Can that be true??!! UGH!

KT

Actually we live in a 2 br house, belive it or not. It is 950 sq ft and the baby is sleeping in our room while we are on an air mattress! We will begin expanding our home (to a palatial 1300 sq ft!) in a few months so things are rather chaotic.

I think it’s great that so many women in our generation/year are having kids well into their late 30’s and beyond. Michelle (Kauffman) Holler just had twin girls a month ago (she also has a 4 year old boy).

Wow that is a long time ago. I can’t even remember what it was like pre-kids some days except I had gobs of time to do things like train for marathons and ponder existential questions.

Are you still at Standard & Poor?

Kentmeister

Hey Kent -
Love the goatee, you’re looking quite the Academic!

My parents retired in Hawaii (Oahu-Mililani area) last year and we visit all the time. We have a ton of relatives there on my father’s side. Kauai is my favorite island so far.

Did you live in Japan at one time? Do you speak Japanese? I am in Japan at least twice a year on business although I conduct it in English. I’m sure I would offend clients left and right if I didn’t…

I may have a trip to Sydney in the next year or two and will definitely look you up. Otherwise, I’ll let you know about Maitais in Hawaii.

Go Wiggles!
Charol

My grandfather lives on Kauai-the third house on Brenneke’s Beach, Poipu, if you know the area. That was part of the reason why we moved there after law school. We lived on the top of Punch Bowl with views from Waikiki to Downtown-without a doubt the best place I have ever lived. Working downtown, however, was pretty much the same as anywhere I guess.

I am in Japan all of the time. The past 3 years I was splitting myself between Japan and Australia, but have finally given that up. Instead I do 5-7 short trips a year now. My wife is Japanese and we met while I was a graduate student in Kobe. In total, I have lived there longer than I have the Mainland US in Nagoya, Kobe, Sapporo, and Tokyo. We speak Japanese at home and I used to teach in Japanese at Hokkaido and Waseda Law Schools. Last year my son’s primary language flipped from Japanese to Australian-English. I am not sure how excited I am about that, but I even catch myself looking for a “rubbish bin” and wanting “biscuits” with my milk. This will sound strange, but I only worked out in my head that you were of Japanese ancestory while I was an undergraduate living in Japan for the first time.

Another aside-with apologies-thanks for posting a list of what makes you happy today. I didn’t want to define myself with outside images of me (eg professor, husband, father, Australian), but rather by my own self-image, ie who I saw myself as. Unfortunately, it sounded incredibly pretentious when I did it. I should have confessed to a love of Budweiser, professional sports, and four-wheel drives (all of which are true). In any event, your using the same method made me feel much less self conscious.

peace

K

I know the area in Kauai, beautiful. Just ran on that main road in fact.

That is wonderful that you are bringing your child up bilingual. I am not fluent or comfortable enough with the language to do that but am hoping that frequent trips to Japan to visit relatives will have a similar effect.

Your list of what you enjoy now was refreshing and honestly, it sounds like you have a great life.

Are you still using duct tape on your loafers?

Oh Kent

Kent, you didn’t sound pretentious! But, you do have to remember that in Alaska, it is February, the sun is just starting to appear and my driveway is still a friggin glacier. I gotta give you a little crap for laying on the Australian beach & sipping on a shiraz don’t I?

Since we are getting on the closer side to 40 I think almost everyone has traded in the cheap bear for Cabernet or at least a cloudy IPA!

It could be worse, you could be Hal, sitting around playing God with what toy I get in my cereal in the morning.

Stan

Beauty, mate. That is why I always like hanging out with you. You should bring the clan down South for a trip. It truly is Alaska with good weather and great wine.

peace.

k

Catching up

Now THAT’s funny! (It’s taken me a while to get through some of the threads). Hilarious, Weston. I hope I can find the video I shot of you at your cabin in the Summer of ‘86. You have some pretty funny moments on it…

Max

Hey Charol! I also have a little Max, born 9/22. I have also attended my fair share of Wiggles concerts with my older sons, but am enjoying the break until Max becomes a groupy. There was a time that my middle son, Peter, would wear nothing but “Murray shirts” (all red with homemade Wiggles insignia).

Kristin Farnham (Hellen)

Ahoy me hardies!

I kept wondering who Kristin Farnham is – HI Kristin! And you’re in Sunnyvale, that’s so close. Maybe we can get a mini reunion going in CA, what do you think?

My favorite is the pirate and unfortunately for Maxy, I make him do the pirate impression every morning to start my day off right.

I'm in love with

Captain Feathersword!

Miss Feathersword

Who is this little person, Lana? We’re practically neighbors! I didn’t realize you were still in the area.

Miss Coco, if you please...

She’ll be two in May. She’s the new best friend of her sister, Sophie, who’s almost 12. Built in babysitter…hallelujah!
I’ve been here since 1986. Scary…longer than I was in AK. How long have you been down here? We have enough people here in the Bay Area for our own little reunion. Hmmm…

I run into your brother and family every time I’m up north. Isn’t it fun to see what everyone is doing?

Boy, I sure miss your slumber parties…

Cheers!
Lana

mini reunion

It would be great to get together. I think there are many of us in the greater bay area. I ran into Michelle Crum at a bar in Los Altos a few months ago.

I’m not sure why I listed myself with my married name, but I have changed that and added a photo that might look a bit more like me.

Yes let’s all get together. I was just in Los Altos a few weeks ago for the opening of Satura Cakes (my cousin’s was here from Japan).

You look great Kristin!

Wiggles RULE !!!

I just wanted to join in the Wiggles fan club here. My duaghter out grew them, but now my son is discovering the Mates from Down Under. I especially love their state of the art 1980’s video production and special fx.

Just wondering…is it possible that Kent sidelines as Wags the Dog? ;)

State of the art video production

Oh yeah!
DOn’t you love the old school wiggles rock? My wee one is obsessed with Jeff.
Unfortunately, we have tivo, so I’m constantly rewinding so she can see it again. and again and again.

TIVO plus kids equals Parental Sanity

Can you point your fingers and do the Twist? (while simultaneously air guitaring it) – blows me away everytime.

Wags

Okay, Hal, I just googled “wags” and I don’t think I look anything like him. When my kid was of Wiggles age, we lived in Japan so he was consumed with Ultraman and Power Rangers. Not quite the soft cuddly version of skivvy wearing Aussie exports. He did like Steve Irwin, Crocodile Hunter, but we can only see it when were in the US (it is not on the tele here). Now that he is 8, it is all Harry Potter, rugby, and pokemon.
peace
imkent

It could be anyone under that suit

Maybe Russell Crowe plays Wags the Dog..?
Don’t take it personally…I think Hal must have made that comment during a hair-envy moment.
Should we read anything into the fact that Steve Irwin isn’t aired in his own country?

(This comment was deleted.)

Crikey !, I stepped in that one.

Sorry Kent, ment the guy in the suit. As a 2nd job it might pay well (hell knows the American kids love the show) and it is the one part that you don’t need an Aussie accent for.

As you are running to class, Walter wants to know if you have a hall pass.

eavesdropping

I am so enjoying reading your conversations! Hi Charol!!!! Hi Kristin! Hi Kent! Hi Katie!!!!!

A few comments because I can’t resist:
1) I think your jobs sound much more interesting than mine
2) I forced my children to learn Japanese (Aiden is pretty fluent at age 15, Reigna hated it so we took her out of it)
3) I didn’t realize Kristin was Kristin Hellen either! How’s your brother and his son, Aidan??

:)
Nicole

Brother John

John’s doing quite well and living just down the street from where we grew up on Iliamna Ave. He has two great kids, Aidan (almost 10) and Hanna (8).

What is your job that you don’t find so interesting?

Nicole Forsi is skulking around 43 things

The grass is always greener....

I’ve been doing packaging design for about 12 years. I enjoy it, but I’ve been in the corporate world for too long… I’ve gotten into fine art photography as an artistic outlet, but that doesn’t keep the kids in tennis/basketball/cross training shoes!

Thanks for the update on John. I spent a bit of time talking to him and Rochene at the 10 year reunion. Their Aidan was the first other Aidan/Aiden I had met. Now there are a ton of them toddling around!

Great picture of your kids, they are adorable!

:>) Nicole

My job is pretty boring . . . . .

Bond research. Beat that! But I can’t stay in NYC unless I keep it up. Okay – back to the bonds.

Nicole Forsi is skulking around 43 things

cardboard boxes

I suppose it’s all in how you look at it. I either waste natural resourses to create excessive packaging around products that will be obsolete in a nanosecond, or I’m housing the homeless.

So Bond research, huh? Should we start making 007 jokes? I prefer Sean Connery…

Happy (almost!) Friday!!

Bond research

Katie, just curious – what exactly does bond research entail? And how did you get into that?

Get Rochene to log on!

Kristin – how are you! I love the little boys..you remind me of Jennifer Hodel who has 4 boys and they adore her!

Shelley sees Rochene and John around Anchorage. How are they doing? Get her to log on.

We left Saratoga about 2 1/2 years ago and came to the farm land..yes we show lambs and have a tractor..it is a riot! Do you ever head south? There are lots of fun boy activities at my house..animals, dirt, hills and little motorized vehicles. My husband has more fun than Nick!

Rochene

I invited Rochene to log on a few days ago and haven’t heard a thing. I know she’s been reading through the emails, but sneaking around about it!

We have never been to SLO or Santa Barbara, but I’d love to head that directions with the boys some time. Your place sounds like boy heaven. My mom lives in Chico with similar surroundings. The boys love it!

John and Rochene are doing well. John has been working 2 days a week in Fairbanks this winter, which has been bitterly cold. He has 2 kids (Aidan 9, and Hanna 8). They were just down here to meet Max in the fall. Hanna was wishing for a girl cousin, but evidently we Farnhams don’t produce such things.

What’s your sister up to? What about the little brothers? Your kids all look so much like you! Good to hear from you!

don't throw that baby out with the sinkwater

Okay, I just have to say that the picture of your kid in the sink is cuter than a box of puppies. Nice to see you, Charol. I believe we’ll all be kickin’ in Los Anchorage soon enough. I look forward to it!

dan the man

This is a great idea and website Dan, I’ve had so much fun catching up with everybody. The next time you tour in the Bay area, let me know and I’ll organize a mini-reunion for CA Westsiders…see you in August!

SF

I’m happy that everyone (me too) is enjoying 43T so much. It’s great catching up. Should I be in SF on tour in the future I’ll alert you.

I’m in SF often enough for other reasons or visiting Kevin & Susan Ellis. Anyhow, it’d be great to see you down there, too.

charolm has gotten 6 cheers on this entry.
