Guatemala 4 years ago

One of my (many) hopes for the trip is to spend time in an indigenous community where gorgeous cloth is woven. Guatemalan colors are inexpressibly vivid & beautiful. Here are places where, in the meantime, we (I, you, anyone who cares) can buy fair-trade items to benefit some Guatemalan communities:

Mayan culture and textiles

Maybe try Chichicastenango for small K’iche city (10,000 people). Very interesting and less touristy than Panajachel, although the latter is on the beautiful Lago Atitlán. Santa Cruz Quiche or Totonicapán are two other pleasant, small K’iche cities. Todos Santos is a good place to stay for learning about Mam culture and textiles.

Thank you!

I will keep these suggestions in mind as we dream about this trip, which is probably still a few years down the road.

When you have time, I look forward to reading about your own Guatemalan & other Latin American experiences.

I'm on my way!

It’s so odd when I check and see what you are up to. I found a great deal on flights to Guatemala and am taking my family of 5 tomorrow. We are not going to be there long enough to see everything that I want, but I am so excited after visiting you this morning!

La Route De L'Or

There’s an old book called La Route De L’Or, written by a woman who worked as a journailst for Radio France. She took a tour of South America by herself—on a motorcycle. The book is fascinating, very inspiring for someone contemplating an adventure. I read it in French and I don’t know if it’s available in English, but if it’s not that’s just another good reason to learn French!
