Take the Albion ferry
Where the heck is this? 3 years ago

I keep hearing about the Albion ferry on the radio in the mornings. And how there is a 1-sailing wait. I have no idea where this ferry is, or where it sails. I believe it carries cars. Hopefully you can just be a passenger, or maybe Kate and I will need to get a CAN car.

The Albion ferry. It’s like a dream.

Love it - take it all the time

I don’t actually need to take the ferry but I take it quite frequently as part of one of my motorcycle rides – cross the Fraser at one of the bridges and come back via the Albion ferry – or vice versa.

The Maple Ridge side is at 240th – East of the main downtown area. Foot passengers are welcome and it takes about 24 cars.

The Langley side is out of Fort Langley (another great place to visit) – Glover Road North from downtown Langely.

The ferry runs every 15 minutes or so most times when there are two boats running (the Kulleet and the Klatua(sp?))

Love the ferries because they let motorcycles on without waiting :)

The view from the run is great – Mount Baker in one direction and the Golden Ears in another – great sunsets!

Ferry Rides

I don’t know if they take foot passengers, but I had always heard about it on the radio as well, and while my husband and I were driving around aimlessly one day and ended up in Maple Ridge we found it. (Back when gas was closer to 70 cents a litre)

It was a 3 sailing wait the day we took it, but it was free and the sailings are only 5 mins each, so that was good.

A boat full of minis.

Normally this boat takes three rows of vehicles, but when the Vancouver Mini Club takes a drive they can increase it to four rows of Minis (I believe – my Mini has never had the chance to take a go at the ferry yet).

I normally don’t take the ferry unless I’m going to Fort Langley. For all other trips from Maple Ridge we go around on the Port Mann. As much as I don’t like to use the gas, the waits are long! We’ve often pulled up to the line and decided that we would try and out run it by driving all the way around. Impatient bunch we are.

And it does take foot passengers. Many commuters leave a car on one side and walk across each morning and night.

Totally worth it !

I live very close to the Albion Ferry and travel on it quite often with my children. WE park our van and ride on with our bikes. Lots of stuff to do at the other side.
Fort Langley is a delight !

Only down side is that there is talk of stopping the ferry when the new bridge is built from Maple Ridge to Langley.

It will be missed

To those of you that enjoy the ferry, yes it is very true that the ferry will end in June 2009 (When the Golden Ears bridge is complete).
I take the ferry alot and enjoy the ride and I don’t even mind the wait. While you wait, you can get a coffee from Kingfishers and read the morning newspaper or get caught up on paperwork. Some folks even catch a nap.
The ferry has been there for almost five decades and is still providing an enjoyable ride for all.
The ferry is bicycle and wheelchair friendly, and the staff do there best to keep passengers content. There are so many good things to mention about the ferry but I feel the experience is best seen with your eyes. The ferry is a great little trip to try and is not just for folks on the weekends. Enjoy your trip and who knows maybe they will keep our little ferry running for years more to come.
Thanks to all the ferry staff and Kingfisher staff for the good experiences that I and others enjoy.

Don.

Shutting down!

I’d better ride the ferry while I still can. I have a grand scheme to take all forms of TransLink transit during a single day, and the Albion Ferry is the one I’m not sure I’ll be able to fit in, since it’s so far away from everything else.

Grand Scheme

The best way to achieve this would probably be to start and end out this way (I live in Maple Ridge).

Depending where you are (and assuming you have a car), you could get to Maple Ridge or Langley first thing in the morning and park up and just walk on the ferry.

When you get back off on the Maple Ridge side there are local buses that run directly to the Port Haney station to catch the West Coast Express. I think the one from the ferry terminal is the 48 and I know you can catch the 45 from a stop less than a quarter mile walk from the ferry.

You can then do all your other rides after getting downtown and get the Express back out in the evening.

Hope you get to complete your plan one day.

Cheers :)

Boris Mann has gotten 2 cheers on this entry.
